Today we’d like to introduce you to Nekiya Desseau.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
If last year taught us anything, it’s that the beauty industry needs to step up representation and inclusivity. I grew up in the beauty industry, watching my mom do nails and competitions while my aunt does hair. I was reluctant to do anything in the beauty industry as far as hair and nails, I wanted nothing to do with it, but I’ve always had a love for it. So I went off to college at Florida A&M University, graduated with a health science degree, got a job and was working on another degree in health science which was being paid for by my employer.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic halted everything. I was laid off from my job trying to figure life out, and that’s when I broke into the nail industry. I was offered the opportunity to go to trade school by the county and it would be paid for, so I thought to myself, why not? It wouldn’t hurt anything and why wouldn’t I take advantage of such an opportunity. Since I already had a passion for nails and the aspect of it I took a leap of faith. So, I finished School, got my license and opened up my own suite. I realized nails was one of my callings. I focused on growing my skills and built my brand, marketed my services and transformed from a doubtful nail specialist to a savvy entrepreneur.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No! After I set up my salon suite, I panicked. What was I thinking? This would take e all of my savings. The future is still uncertain. What’s going to happen with the economy? I jumped in started advertising to gain clients, It’s been a little slow but I’m certainly determined because I know the success I am wanting is not going to happen overnight.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am what you would call a Licensed Nail Technician or Nail Specialist. I do manicures, pedicures, nail enhancements and that’s just to name a few. While not all nail techs are comfortable using an electric file, I am, but I prefer a hand file any day. I specialize in foot care, specifically with doing pedicures. I can knock them out in about 45 minutes. What sets me apart from others is that my suite is inside of a barber lounge so most of my clientele are males. They love the fact that they can come to get a haircut and pamper themselves with a manicure and pedicure in the same facility and not feel ashamed. It’s a safe haven for them and I am glad I can be of service. I also give an upscale vibe to my suite. I am most proud of being able to get my own space and be my own boss straight out of Finishing nail school, that is one of the biggest accomplishments for me.
How do you think about luck?
As a result of COVID-19, I lost my job. I was able to land in nail school on a grant. Also, the fact that my mom is in the Nail industry is pretty good luck to me. Having a great support system, as well as being able to secure a suite for my business.
