Today we’d like to introduce you to Alana Scales.
Hi Alana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was a child, I was always styling my barbies hair. I would say that’s where the interest first began with hair…and from there, I ran with it. When I graduated high school, I knew where I wanted to be…and that was cosmetology school! I graduated in 2014 from WestSide tech and that’s when things got real. I worked at a salon I used to get my hair done at as a pre-teen and then ventured off to another salon. I had a rude awakening when I realized it took time to build up a clientele before being able to do booth rental. I made the decision to work for a corporation instead of a privately owned salon…which was Jcpenny’s Salon. I stayed at Jcpenny’s salon for three years building not only my confidence up but my skill level as well. Once I felt I was ready to make the next big step, I moved onto booth rental at another privately-owned salon (Natural Hair Wigs Salon), three years later I’m still here with a consistent clientele and new skills under my belt. It’s been a wonderful journey that will continue going and growing.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest obstacle I feel I have faced is my confidence. In cosmetology school, I was so scared of doing any and everything. It sounds crazy but it wasn’t until I was out into the “real” salon world that I was more open to practicing being fearless. I feel every time I’ve reached one milestone, it’s been another one waiting for me…which is honestly the only way to grow. Till this day, I still get overwhelmed when I think about all I still want to do and accomplish. The struggle for me has been getting out of my own head and believing I can do anything I put my mind to.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a hairstylist, I have been doing this profession for eight years. What I love most about my career is that it doesn’t feel like work, it’s always been a passion of mine and it shows in my work. I specialize in natural hair, curly cuts, color, relaxed hair, wedding hair, microlink extensions, etc. I love hair so I keep myself informed on how to deal with every texture. I am most proud of how I put my all into my craft. I spend time speaking with my clients to make sure I meet their needs and that their experience with me is fulfilling. I pride myself in not only meeting my client’s needs but also making them feel more than a client…they become my fam. When clients sit in my chair, they feel right at home, I am all about good energy and I am thankful my clients exude that.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I honestly see myself owning my own salon. I have always said that owning a salon is something I wanted but now it is a matter of bringing it to fruition.
