Check Out Alexandria Joseph’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Joseph.

Hi Alexandria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. Even as a little kid in school, I would always get in trouble by the teachers for drawing instead of reading after getting my work done. In middle school, I knew I wanted to “do something with art and computers,” and I had always had an interest in fashion so I thought about being a fashion illustrator. Then in high school, I started taking graphic arts classes where I learned that graphic design was a career path that even existed and I began to fall in love with design. From there, I did what a lot of designers do and began spending hours in Photoshop and making designs about the different fandoms I was a part of to post on Tumblr. After high school, I went to college to get a BFA in graphic design but ended up dropping out at the end of 2019 and working both freelance and in-house as a graphic designer, which is what I am still doing today.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I would say that it’s still bumpy today lol. Making that initial decision to drop out of college was a tough and scary one. I knew that it would be harder to get a job without degree, but I also knew that my mental health at the time would not allow me to continue on and finish school so I had to do what was best for me in the end. I hit another bump when the pandemic hit because it made the job market very unstable and so much harder to land a position that actually pays a livable wage and doesn’t demand 5 different job skills under the “graphic designer” title. Even through these challenges, I never lost my love of graphic design and have been learning new skills to level up my work and portfolio.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a graphic design specializing in brand design and merchandise design. A lot of my work is inspired by music so I often will be listening to a song and pick out a line that I envision a design for –– whether it be a poster, a piece of merchandise, etc. I am most proud of my branding work because if any of the brands were to appear on a store shelf, it would stand out from the rest. I am not afraid to challenge the norm and do something different from everyone else while staying true to the brand’s identity.

What does success mean to you?
I define success by how little I have to worry. I don’t want to be obscenely rich or famous. My ultimate goal is to be able to take care of myself and my family without even having to think about it.
