Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa May Scrivener.
Hi Alyssa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Alyssa but I go by Aly. I have been on the journey of portrait and wedding photography for 15 years. I shot my first backyard wedding at 15 and photography has been a constant in my life since. In 2020 after working in the medical field full time while shooting weddings and portraits of all kinds on the side, I decided to take the plunge into full time freelance photography. Taking the leap of faith and putting trust in myself and my brand was the best thing I could have ever done but also a huge mental obstacle I was able to overcome. Believing in your dreams takes guts. Outside of photography, I am a proud wife to the most amazing husband, Wayne, and we have 3 cats. We live on the Space Coast and enjoy nature. I am also a hobbyist of backyard beekeeping, tarantula keeping, horseback riding, and CrossFit.
Photography is a part of my soul I will never be able to part with, I feel fully alive and my most authentic version of myself with a camera in hand.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest challenge so far has been self-doubt. Imposter syndrome is real and it is so hard to face. Most days I still fight that voice of doubt inside my head but I have an incredible support system in family, friends, and clients who cheer me on.
Another tough course to navigate was building a sense of community as a freelance photographer. For a while, I had a lot of negative interactions with others in the industry and it really discouraged me for a while. But through styled shoots and supporting other locals in the state on social media, I now have a bountiful list of professionals I am proud to call my friend and refer clients to if I am booked or think a project would be a better fit.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to describe my work as warm, romantic, and timeless, with just the right amount of artistic flair thrown in. Emphasis on emotion and candid posing prompts.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters is capturing the moments of life to freeze in time, to hold a physical print in your hand and memorize the lines on a loved one’s face who is no longer here. Time travel in the form of a photograph with a memory you will cherish forever. Seeing yourself in such a way you have never seen before and feeling beautiful. To see the tears in your partner’s eyes at the altar you may not have noticed through your own tears of joy. A moment of genuine laughter, caught on camera and you can almost hear an audible laugh in your mind by looking at their faces. These are the reasons I am a photographer.
