Check Out Barb Jones’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barb Jones.

Hi Barb, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been a storyteller since I was a small child. I grew up in Hawaii, with a deep sense of appreciation for my Hawaiian, SouthEast Asian and European heritages. Part of the Hawaiian culture involves storytelling and I loved the stories about the Gods, Goddesses, demons and other supernatural races. I had a fourth grade teacher who challenged me to put my stories to paper and that’s how my writing journey began. Since then, I’ve written stories, novels, and papers in addition to telling my stories orally. As I grew up, I continued to foster that love of storytelling into my books today as well as public speaking.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Writing is never a smooth road. It has its bumps, twists and turns but the journey in itself is truly worthwhile. Every writer struggles with writing blocks, loss of motivation at times and the wonderful rejection letters. Being a writer means you need to have a tough skin, especially when it comes to the rejection letters. I remember getting my first one as a young person. Luckily, I had parents who were supportive and helped put things into perspective with soothing reassurances. In fact, my dad “pretended” he was shocked and asked who he should beat up for rejecting his little girl. That nonchalant attitude coupled with my mom’s teaching of perserverance helped me to overcome these obstacles by reminding me that when you fall off the horse in life, you stand right back up, dust yourself off and try again.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love being an author. While it is not my full-time career, it is the most rewarding because I tend to be a strong creative with so many stories I want to tell, that writing is the best opportunity for that. In my writing, I am known to build a massive universe centered around several different series with characters that my readers are invested in. I am very excited when I talk to readers about my books and they tell me about how they imagined the world I built with the characters. When they say they feel like they are in the story with the characters, I am tickled pink about that.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
A lot of things make me happy but probably the two most important things are family and faith. I am strongly committed to my family. My elderly mother lives with me as well as my two young adult children (while attending college and graduate school). My children come home on breaks and whenever they need home cooking. Everything about what I do is centered around family and the sense of family is apparent in my books as well.
