Check Out Briana McPhee’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana McPhee.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
How I got started was doing my brother’s hair in simple styles like plaits and two strands twist.

Then when I got to high school about my 10th-grade year, I was asked to retwist my friend and his cousin locs which I had never done. My friend at the time walked me through every step to get his cousin’s hair done then I did his.

From then on, I would retwist any guy friend’s hair that would ask me and I eventually locked up my own cousin’s hair in the form of two strand twist before he left for Georgia. It uses to take me over four hours to do a simple retwist.

Now in 2022, I have clients who are faithful clients and brand-new clients. A retwist at best may take 2 and half hours depending on the length of hair. I started doing insta loc back in 2019.

I learned how to do these by practicing on my own head then a friend of mine wanted his hair done and I locked his. I also learned how to do microlocs last year in 2021. I try my best to get better every time I touch another person’s head. I have expanded the services I provide besides just locs, I also do two strands, plaits, and braids on natural hair, faux locs, passion twists, and sew-ins.

I believe growth comes when you find passion in what you do. I hope to have my own salon in the near future and be able to work this as my full-time job.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth sailing journey. I have lost clients along the way. When it comes to the loc world, the main issue I have is consistent work. I would love to be booked on the days I’m available but that does not always happen.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have mainly worked in the customer service field for the last ten years. I am most proud of my most recent job which I can’t state where but the work we do to help families is amazing. What sets me apart from a lot of people in my personality.

My willingness to want to help others no matter who they are. Also, my dedication to people.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking?
When it comes to taking a risk, I feel they help you become a better and stronger person. Risks allow you to step out of your comfort zone and become someone people may need more than who you are now.

I have taken risks especially with doing locs. Teaching myself how to do different loc styles and methods of locking is a huge risk, but it made me who I am today.

I tried different things on people who were willing to allow me to just create and for that I’m grateful.
