Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Heyes.
Hi Christina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for baking, however a year ago I committed to a healthier way of living by eliminating sugar from my diet. This resulted in also a reduction of baking in my free time. From there I began to read and study more about holistic healing, herbology and crafting all natural skincare. I ended up expanding on my own apothecary with various herbs and essential oils. From there, I started crafting simple lip balms while incorporating all natural ingredients and oils to give away to family and friends. Once realizing how similar this hobby was to baking, minus the sugar, it snowballed into crafting other products. From lip balms to scrubs, solid perfume, soy candles, decorative soaps and perfume oil blends, I spent a month developing my brand into a website. Although I still enjoy baking from time to time, I’ve transitioned my passion into crafting products for my customers that don’t contain harmful chemicals or toxins like many store bought products. I’ve also incorporated other spiritual products into my site for those who are exploring their spiritual side with crystals and herbs.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
With crafting various products, there also comes the perfecting part. To experiment, you have to test and with this comes a lot of wasted materials. This business is almost consistent with science. The ingredients must be heated and cooled to certain temperatures and came become wasted very quickly. Like baking, you have measure and weigh the ingredients precisely. It was a lot of trial and error in the beginning and even now I’m consistently researching and learning different ways to always perfect my product. Just like any business, you also have to invest by losing money before making any back. However, in the end, when you enjoy what you do and it reflects with happy customers, it all seems worth it. Going into this I also had no clue on developing websites. This was a challenge in itself. By investing just a few hours a day in between working my 45 hr a week job, I was able to create and publish my site within a month. If I could give anyone any advice about website development it would be not to get overwhelmed or discouraged. It takes time but the end result is pretty impressive. Even now I go in weekly and make minor adjustments to ensure that it is up to date and easy to navigate for my customers.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For 25 years I’ve been in retail management. I’ve managed businesses anywhere from 1 million to 16 million in annual sales. I’ve managed a staff from 8 or 10 employees to over 100. Although working for many corporations over the years, I’ve always thought about how to transition this experience into something I can call my own. My intention is to continue learning my craft and developing high quality products for customers to try and help me market and spread the word to family and friends. With all of my experience in marketing and sales, this is the best way to grow any brand.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I would like to start small by making back any income that I have invested into my brand. From there I would like to rely on my business for my main source of income. This would allow me to spend more time traveling, seeing friends and family and be able to eventually open a store front down the road.
