Check Out Ciyera Flemming’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciyera Flemming.

Hi Ciyera, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I had just had my second son and I realized that I was missing so much time with my children and giving my all to a company that would replace me in 24 hours. I finally took the leap of investing in myself and learning semi-permanent makeup and the ride has been wild ever since!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t. Getting started in this industry is expensive and with 2 young children, like life isn’t hard enough was just icing on the cake Haha. I also do not feel as if the education I initially received truly prepared me for this industry. Of course, everything is a learning process and I can 100% say I learn something new every day but I wish I had gone to another artist. I didn’t feel confident for months and I did a lot of self-paced education (shoutout to Lexi Bowler). The final hurdle that is hard to get past is building your clientele. Since the service isn’t like lashes and you don’t like it and you can just take it off it makes it a lot harder to find people to trust to build your portfolio and make some sort of income. I’ve learned to take it just one day and one task/goal at a time. Every day is better than the last.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work as a permanent makeup artist. I offer ombré brows (also known as powder brows), combo brows, and microblading. I don’t really specialize in any style specifically because the service is based on the client’s skin and their personal expectations and goals. I would say combo and microblading are more popular but I love doing them all honestly. PMU is similar to picking any other artist. You pick them out for their personality, their techniques, location, etc. I try to make your eyebrows getting done more than just a regular appointment I really try to make it an experience and I truly care. This isn’t just a job for me, my love language is often a gift/act of service so seeing people’s reactions really keep me fulfilled. Especially when a client cries Haha I’ll be right there with you doing the same. Eyebrows seem like something so simple but it’s crazy how much they can change a person’s confidence and lifestyle for the better.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I would really use social media. It’s 2022 and networking is important but try to get out of our local area and your comfort zone. Look for people who have the same passions as you and who have the same learning style as you. Really reach out and keep working at it. I used to ask simple questions that a lot of “big people” would use but remember social media following doesn’t equal real-life success. Also, look out for people who genuinely want to help others. For example, Lexi Bowler (@bowlesthetics), I have never actually met her in real life *I would die* but she’s always been encouraging of my work. She has educational videos with her online subscription and doesn’t charge a kidney because she wants It to be generally accessible. I’ve since learned so much from her social media and I was able to improve my work with her products and pro tips.
