Check Out Crystal “Rain” Barron’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal “Rain” Barron

Hi Crystal, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my baking journey like most, in my family’s kitchen. At a very early age I loved to help make and decorate cookies, cakes, and all sorts of baked goods for the holidays. From there, I went on to pursue a degree in sequential arts. During my time in college and through the COVID-19 pandemic I rediscovered my passion for baking.

After graduation, I worked in a local bagel shop and bakery in the Savannah area as their head baker. While there, my food and baked goods were featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives. Watching Guy Fieri taste my food was definitely a highlight of my baking journey. It was really the first time I realized I could build a company out of my passion. From there I began catering small cookie orders on the side to a local music venue, Graveface who had a major focus in all things goth, punk, and oddity. I’ve always loved Halloween and all things weird so I suppose this is where the idea for my company, Grumpy Bat Bakery grew out of.

Since then I’ve moved back to the Orlando area to be closer to family and work on my businesses by selling my baked goods at local oddity markets, shows, and venues. With Grumpy Bat I wanted to create something where everyone could enjoy my creations and feel welcome for all the weirdos and weird at heart.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest obstacle has honestly just been trying to get our name out there and what makes us unique. There’s a lot of competition in the baking space so its been about finding our niche and audience.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been a creative person all my life which I feel comes through in my baking. With Grumpy Bat I specialize in creating baked goods, primarily cookies, with a spooky twist. What makes me so proud with the company is it came solely from my heart and everything from the recipes, to the logo, and packaging were all created by me. I feel that my flavors set me apart from others in that I try to take the typical ones you may see and flip them on their heads. The other thing that makes us unique is we’re big supporters of Halloween all day, every day.

What matters most to you?
For my business the thing that matters to me the most is bringing a smile to someone’s face with my baking. I want to make people say wow that’s different. Food is such a shared and loved experience by everyone that I want to inspire others with or at least make their day a little sweeter.
