Today we’d like to introduce you to Delicia Powell.
Hi Delicia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got into makeup through watching my grandmother apply her makeup when I was little. I couldn’t wait to start wearing it myself. At 15, I was finally able to wear makeup, it definitely wasn’t that extra at the time, but I was happy and I kept practicing until I got better. I started doing makeup for other people and content creating in 2017, when I was in the 11th grade. I’m so thankful to all the clients that gave me a chance when I was starting out. I’m very quiet in person, but very comfortable on camera, so content creating is definitely an outlet to express myself while doing what I love. Building a community on social media allowed me to start getting brand deals in 2023 and promoting a variety of products from makeup to perfume and even lifestyle products. I was also able to experience doing makeup for Spring New York Fashion Week 2023. I was able to network and meet some amazing people.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Building clientele and having to market yourself isn’t easy, but it’s definitely worth it. And trying to build a genuine community on social while being a black content creator is difficult because sometimes our content doesn’t get as much exposure or the criteria that brands want you to follow doesn’t celebrate our individuality/creativity. For example, “short nails…aesthetically pleasing kitchen…straight hair” sometimes it seems like they’re looking for one type of person, but we’re multifaceted with different styles, creative ideas and aesthetics. That’s what makes the content beautiful. I love content creating and being a makeup artist because I can be a positive representation to other creative black women like me who want shine in these careers.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a traveling Makeup Artist and I’ve worked with a wide range of skin tones. I also provide my services at events, such as weddings, fashion shows, and pageants. I am also a Content Creator with a focus on beauty and lifestyle content. I’m proud of the fact that I never give up. Being an entrepreneur is hard work, but I want this for myself. God gave me this vision, He put this dream in my heart, so I trust Him to make it fall into place as long as I do the work and seek Him first.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I use the YouVersion Bible app daily, so I can read my daily devotionals and scriptures to strengthen my relationship with God because I wouldn’t have anything without Him. I use Good Notes on my iPad to write in my prayer/gratitude journal. Structured is an amazing app to plan out my days and it sends me notifications for each task. Acuity is an affordable booking site that I use to book my makeup appointments. Canva, CapCut, VN are great editing tools that I use to create content, the pro memberships are definitely worth it.
