Check Out Denae Fluellen’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denae Fluellen.

Hi Denae, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Ever since I was a little girl I have always been very taken by the arts. As a former Child Actress/Model, music was the piece of the puzzle that me whole. Performing was my life! At the tender age 4, I sang in front of a humongous crowd inside the Fashion Square Mall. Listening to the cheers of the crowd and the adrenaline pumping during the performance, I realized my purpose. I started to write poems slowly, and once I’d gotten better, I began to write songs. The very first song I’d ever written was quite horrible. I went back to poetry for a while to perfect my craft. Once I reached middle school, I was fortunate enough to get a couple of my poems published! That was the confirmation needed to start writing my songs. As an empath, music is the way I connect with others. By telling my story, I am telling theirs as well. I would say through the punchline lyrics, edgy personality, supersonic beats, and the soul in my voice creates “the voltaic.” The Denae Joi sound is like the process of electricity being produced; it’s undeniable! Music saved my life, and I want to be able to save others through music.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Anything worth having is worth fighting for! That is exactly what this journey has been when it comes to pursuing a career in music. The biggest struggle has been financially. In a perfect world, I could devote all my time to music, just working on writing, recording, performing, and releasing the music. However, this isn’t a perfect world, and real-life sets in. Being a recording artist costs a lot. There is studio time, radio campaigns, photo shoots, advertising, social media promotions, music videos, etc. None of that is cheap, and I didn’t even mention the bills to live! One can only expect the results based off of their budget, which brings up the scammer and exploitation of indie artists. Secondly, there is the struggle of being a female. There are a lot of pigs in this industry, and they are willing to try and sleep with you by any means necessary. The higher up you go the worse it gets, and it can either be voluntary or involuntary. I recently had to rebuild my team for this very reason; I chose my soul over easy success.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Denae Joi is on its way to becoming a household name in the entertainment industry. I am a singer, songwriter, poet, actress, and print model. I am most proud of reaching 30k streams on Spotify. The proof that my music is finally connecting with others feels amazing. I feel what sets me apart is that my goal is to connect with others through music and use my platforms to bring opportunities to other diamonds in the rough! I’d rather make an impact than be famous.

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
I think the type of music I make is risk-taking. The sound that My team and I have created is electric! We are bringing back feel-good music, and I am going against the grain. It is unheard of for women of color to pursue POP Music. I am taking a risk because I am doing what society says I shouldn’t or can’t! To take it up a notch, I am also Dark skin! In my opinion, the risk takers are the innovators. My best quality has always been that I didn’t fit in; now I know it was because I was born to stand out.
