Today we’d like to introduce you to Dia del Trus.
Hi Dia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
As a multi-ethnic military brat with an immensely supportive family, I grew up knowing I could do anything and go anywhere in life. While it was exciting to feel this way, it was difficult figuring out where I truly belonged. Through my education, I tried out anything from the law or medicine to history or journalism – and while they all felt good at first, none of it felt quite right.
During my junior year of college, I found myself in a struggle between continuing on the path I’d already started (my intent at the time was to become a psychiatrist) or derailing my life to do what I’d known I’ve loved for years: music.
The entire time I was twisting myself into different shapes, I was also singing, acting, producing, and playing instruments at home. Without realizing it, music had effortlessly become my everything. It was what I did to decompress, inspire myself, feel better or validated, etc. So, when I *briefly* dropped out of one school, moved back in with my mom, and found that all I was doing in my free time during COVID was recording, writing lyrics, or producing a new song, I decided once and for all it was time to take the leap.
Fast forward just 2 years and I’ve not only found where I belong, I finally know who I am and want to be. So far, I’ve armed myself with a manager, friends, and family who believe in me – which is already more than I had originally expected.
My journey has only just begun, but I’m off to a fantastic start, I believe.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Plenty of struggles! Between some truly terrible relationship experiences, constantly moving and not knowing what the future holds for me, and ample doubts along the way, I’ve been deterred from following my dreams numerous times. But to hell with them, this is my life and I’m going to live it the best and happiest I can!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an alternative R&B producer/singer/songwriter. I enjoy meshing my genre with others to display my eclectic music tastes and ideas – especially lo-fi and EDM, but I’m looking forward to collaborating with other artists to further explore different sounds. I’d like to think I’m most known for refusing to fit into any box – this is also what I’m most proud of.
I think what sets me apart from most other artists is that I’m not only interested in having the spotlight when it comes to music. I also take pleasure in being behind the scenes to the magic – not just in the studio, but live. I work in the music festival & live events industry in any way I can – as typical event staff or on the business end of things (marketing & management). This has also allowed me to explore my own goals as an artist and financially support my interests and music.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the weather here the most! I take photos of the sky and of nature just about every chance I get because there’s so many vibrant colors always gracing my eyes. I even enjoy the thunderstorms and rain here – I feel it’s gloomy in most other locations.
I like traffic the least, but I’ll always complain about that!
