Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Maurita Sutton Brown.
Hi Dr. Maurita, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am Dr. Maurita Sutton Brown married to Mr. David H. Brown, a woman of God & led by His word, an interior designer, life coach, author, and philanthropist whose life’s work has always been rooted in purpose, beauty, and service. For over 30 years, I have designed and decorated residential and commercial spaces across the United States, believing deeply that every home should be a haven. My education blends design and faith, rooted in a BFA in Interior Design, an MBA in Global Business, and a PhD in Religious Arts shaping how I create spaces and guide lives with intention.
As my work evolved, so did my calling. In 2007, I began coaching women through seminars, workshops, and intimate one-on-one sessions, both in person and virtually. Coaching became a sacred space where women could rediscover themselves, heal, and grow. My three-book Availing Series was written Between 2014 -2019. (Availing Through Prayer, Availing While Fasting & Availing Into Your Purpose), was born from that journey, inviting women to journal, reflect, and strengthen their relationship with God through prayer, fasting, and purpose.
Traveling throughout the world with my husband has expanded my perspective and refined my vision. Each country, culture, and city has influenced how I see beauty, resilience, and humanity. Those experiences continue to inspire my design philosophy and my lifestyle brand, Simply Maurita, a curated collection of hand-poured candles and refined home accents now found in homes around the globe.
Today, my heart for service is expressed through HER Scholarship Fund Inc., an initiative I created to support young women pursuing higher education in the Arts and Fine Arts. Through scholarships, mentorship, and college-readiness initiatives, I am devoted to cultivating a future where female artists are equipped, confident, and fully supported. Alongside this mission, I continue to work with both design and life coaching clients while creating hand-poured candles for boutiques nationwide, as well as select festivals and pop-up experiences. As I travel the world, I remain anchored in creation, designing spaces, guiding lives, and crafting meaningful moments, while collecting memories with my family that quietly inspire every chapter of my work.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, but it has been a meaningful one. Navigating a new marriage to David, welcoming a new baby buy Winston, raising three children, and later watching our daughters, Symphony & Harmony, marry and our grandchildren arrive, all while building businesses. That required strategic planning, resilience, and unwavering faith in God. Entrepreneurship brought its share of obstacles, but each challenge strengthened my resolve and deepened my trust. I believe the beauty of life is found in the experiences we overcome, because they become our testimony and that is living proof of God’s goodness, grace, and perfect timing.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is devoted to supporting women in both their personal lives and the spaces they call home. I specialize in designing homes as intentional havens while guiding women to design their lives with structure, organization, and self-love. By seamlessly intertwining interior design and life coaching, I create holistic transformations that honor both environment and emotional well-being.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has played very little role in my life and business, but faith, preparation, and perseverance have played everything. I don’t believe my journey has been shaped by chance, but by divine alignment and intentional choices, even in seasons that felt uncertain or difficult. What some might call “bad luck” were often pivotal moments of refinement, health challenges, major life transitions, and seasons of starting over, that ultimately strengthened my purpose and clarified my calling.
Any “good luck” I’ve experienced came from showing up consistently, doing the work with excellence, and trusting God through every season. Opportunities unfolded because I was prepared to meet them, whether in design, coaching, authorship, or philanthropy. I’ve learned that grace meets effort, and favor follows obedience. In business and in life, I’ve found that when you remain grounded in faith, committed to growth, and open to evolution, what appears as luck is often the result of alignment, resilience, and trust in God’s timing.
