Check Out Emily Nelson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Nelson.

Hi Emily, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I began as a teen obsessed with getting my nails done. I would go to the local salons in my area but could never find anyone to do what I wanted. So, one day I decided that I could figure out how to do it myself, I went to target, got a cheap $7.99 acrylic kiss kit, and went to work. When I finished my nails, I thought I did an astounding job, when I look back, I wouldn’t say they were necessarily astounding. From then on, I did my own nails, I wore them all the time constantly changing them and trying new things. Eventually, people started to notice and would ask me to do their nails. I didn’t take anyone because I was shy and nervous at the time. Then the pandemic hit, I lost my job and struggled to find a new one, & all the time I was stuck in quarantine, I did nails & watched endless amounts of videos. So, one day It clicked, I loved & was obsessed with nails, so that’s what I would do! I started building piece by piece getting supplies & equipment. Eventually, I started taking close friends, then friends of friends, and eventually expanded to social media. I practiced certain skills, like acrylic application, shaping, & art constantly and for hours on end. I started to eventually gain recognition on Instagram for my art & out of pocket nail ideas. I was lucky enough to even work with brands like naildbynya, nail house, & Krylx as an ambassador. I continue to work today as a full-time nail artist and I genuinely love what I do, I love my clients & the art we get to create together. I am currently working on my craft & even on opening my own brand hopefully in the near future.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There were always struggles, trying to find advice from nail techs and getting turned away, having weeks where there would be no clients, & even finding the motivation to be creative when you’re burnt out.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I consider myself a nail artist, I specialize in nail art like characters, movie scenes, 3D art & characters, glow in the dark, & much more. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come in my art, I’ve improved so much and it’s only getting better. I think that my openness to trying new forms and styles set me apart and how versatile I can be in my art.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel that passion and a genuine love for what you do are key. Also, be determined to do your best and push forward despite problems or roadblocks that may be in the way.
