Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Urbanek
Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story…. gosh where do I begin?? It started when I was about 13/14 listening to music constantly. I lived in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, home to about 500 people. I stumbled upon edm at that point, with Skrillex dropping Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites peeking my interest of this insane genre. I had always listened to just pop music and country, and I never really understood the edm scene back then. I made Kandi (beaded bracelets, necklaces, etc that you trade with other ravers) and acted like I was going to go to a rave, even though most raves you have to be 18 to even step inside. I just liked the idea of the community, not really knowing anything about it.
When I finished high school, I ended up following someone to Orlando Florida. It was a huge move for me, and in the chaos I lost part of myself. EDM wasn’t big in my life anymore, and I had to put it on the back burner due to relationship troubles.
Fast forward to the present…. I met my now fiancé who reignited the love and passion I had once for the community and music. He actually opened that door again for me, sharing the common interest and showing me what a rave/music festival really is. It was eye opening, especially since I have always fantasized about going to these events.
Going to my first festival changed my life. That brings us to where I am today. I have a love and burning passion for the community. It has changed me for the better, and now I want to devote my life to positivity, love, and good music.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been easy at all. I’ve always been self conscious, and a huge introvert. Being at a festival is extremely overstimulating at first, and I wasn’t sure if I’d ever grow out of being uncomfortable.
But, the community itself has helped me significantly. My body image has improved, I love to talk to new people, and my outlook on life has improved.
My best advice? Take the plunge. It might look scary, too big, and uneasy, but it also might just change your life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I would consider myself a micro-influencer, even though I hate that term. But, it does describe me the best. Not only do I love modeling and promoting shows, but I love spreading positivity.
My proudest moments are ones at festivals themselves, where I get to meet new people and make their day, whether that be by dancing with them, giving them small trinkets, or just complimenting them!
I feel like the edm community/influencers all serve the same job, making sure we take care of each other. That’s what I love most about posting in this scene.
What matters most to you? Why?
Mental health. I feel like it’s just not talked about enough. I struggle with it everyday, and seriously this community has helped me in ways I can’t describe. Everyone deserves to be seen, loved, and get the help they need. That’s why I continue to spread positivity in anyway I can, and try to foster an environment that I’m proud of.
