Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginny Niebauer.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
One afternoon, I was out in my garden, completely lost in the joy of arranging flowers and tending to every bloom. My husband called out to me from across the yard and said, “Hey! This is what you love to do – why don’t you find a way to do it every day and make a business out of it?” That simple moment planted the seed. With his encouragement and a whole lot of passion, I turned a love for flowers into a full-time floral business. That’s how ART among the FLOWERS began, rooted in love, grown with a purpose.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. At the time we were running a sailboat rental business back in Texas, but I was worn out from being out in the elements teaching kids and adults how to sail and was ready for a new chapter. I knew I wanted to build something beautiful and creative – something that made people smile. So we took a leap of faith. We poured all of our savings into the dream, and rented a retail space.
But it wasn’t all roses. In the early days, we faced real challenges. I’ll never forget the time we had just stocked the cooler full of fresh flowers – then a hurricane hit. The power was out for days, but fortunately, we didn’t loose our inventory because we had invested in good coolers and the flowers were still cool when the power came back on. Between the weather, tight finances and trying to get our name out in a competitive market, every step felt like an uphill climb.
Then came 2020. Like so many other small businesses, we were forced to let all our employees go and shut the doors when COVID hit. Weddings were canceled, events stopped, and foot traffic disappeared. It was heartbreaking. But we pivoted – offering contactless deliveries, focusing on online orders, and doing everything my husband and I alone could to do to help family members stay connected.
We pushed forward. We believed in what we were building – something beautiful, something meaningful. With each arrangement, each new customer and each lesson learned, ART among the FLOWERS began to bloom.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As an artist and creator of floral designs, I would like to highlight my passion, vision and how my work goes beyond just arranging flowers – it’s about telling stories, evoking emotions, and creating beauty. I basically create living art. Each bouquet I design is a reflection of emotion, season and a story. I see color, texture and movement the way a painter sees a blank canvas. Whether it’s a lush romantic arrangement or a whimsical wildflower piece, my work is about capturing beauty in the moment and turning it into something unforgettable. As a florist artist, I’m inspired by nature, emotion, and the joy that flowers bring into people’s lives. Every design is personal, crafted with heart, and meant to leave a lasting impression.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Start early in life, don’t wait until you turn 50 like I did! Don’t be afraid to take the leap to do your own thing. Give it everything you have. Eat, breath and live for your business until it starts to run without you! Also, come up with a great motto, like my husband and I did to keep us going when times got tough … ours was and still is “failure is not an option”.
