Today we’d like to introduce you to Hazel Zelaya.
Hi Hazel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I had always been into beauty since I was just a little girl. I remember copying makeup videos in elementary school, doing my friends brows in middle school, and taking my first ever prom makeup clients in High school. Going into college I had never considered that beauty and esthetics could be my livelihood. One day a lash extensions course came across my moms facebook and she offered to sign up my sister and I. Without even thinking about it after the course I purchased everything I needed to begin taking clients out of my bedroom. After a year I graduated with both my Associates and My Full Specialist license. Since then I’ve worked in two amazing salons and met so many women in my industry that motivated me to do and be better. Now I have my own Salon Suite where I can teach other women how possible it is to build a business in this industry. Every day I am looking into how I can expand on my own services and reach others. I love this industry and getting to work with so many empowering women and wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an entrepreneur is never easy. With the beauty and esthetics industry growing at an exponential rate you can expect it to become over saturated. Every new service you learn is like starting over once again. There’s a learning curve to everything I specialize in from lash extensions, to waxing, and brow services. Even now after doing lash extensions for over 3 and a half years I feel like I’m constantly learning every day. Quitting my day job was another big step as I had to make sure I would make it through busy and slow seasons. Proving yourself to clients and making them feel comfortable enough to book with you is hard to do when you’ve never met. I never claim to be the best but I always know that I try my best. Everyday I am committed to learning and working harder than the day before.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a licensed full specialist that specializes in Lash extensions, Body waxing, and Brow services. My bread and butter is definitely Lash extensions, it’s why I’m known for, and what I’m best at. Having done lashes for over 3.5 years at this point I almost feel like I could do it with my eyes closed. I love lash extensions because they’re extra customizable, what works for one won’t work for another. When I entered this space I knew that there was a need for a Lash Artist who focused on natural enhancement work. There was a market for girls who wanted a natural look that would enhance their features without overpowering the face. I feel so blessed to have found a clientele that appreciates that kind of work and the technique that goes behind it. Articulating a lash set requires patience and a mastery for the process of eyelash extension application. It is a skill, that is very technical and precise. The time and effort I put into each set is shown by the intricate result.
