Today we’d like to introduce you to Iikia Poitier.
Hi, Iikia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started pursuing my occupation after dropping out of college. I was lost and didn’t know what to do. I remember sitting at the computer one day and googling “short schooling careers.” Sonography was one of the careers that popped up and piqued my interest. Long story short, I ended up not only loving the program, but I also had an excellent eye for the images early on. As time went on and I continued to sharpen my skills and gain experience, I became more and more passionate about women’s pelvic health. That passion landed me in the position I am in today and has been driving me to continue inspiring future Sonographers and spreading awareness to women about their pelvic health.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road was difficult. I was building a family while in school, so I was pregnant twice and newly married in the program. Towards the end of the program, most students cannot work due to having to complete clinical hours. I was broke and going through many life changes then, but I pushed through. Once I was hired at my first job, things got better. Being a new Sonographer was also a little stressful, but what job isn’t? Those struggles just made me more appreciative of where I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a general sonographer who specializes in OBGYN. I am known for using sound waves to help diagnose patients. I am most proud of the fact that I get to spread awareness to women about their pelvic health and help find solutions to whatever problems they may encounter, such as pelvic pain from ovarian cysts, fibroids, pregnancy, etc. What sets me apart from others is the unique social media platform I have grown to teach women things about their reproductive organs that they may not have known.
We’re always looking for lessons in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes. One interesting thing I learned was how the menstrual cycle responds to different viruses. Being that I work in the OBGYN field, I was able to witness how COVID-19 caused multiple changes within a woman’s period if she was affected by the virus.
