Check Out Jennifer Cisne’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Cisne.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was not always a good cook! I did however grow up in a latin home where a home cooked flavorful meal was always available. Even though we didn’t have much, my grandmother and mother would always provide home cooked meals and a plate was always offered to anyone who walked through the door. Since we lived in a building in Brooklyn, NY, there were many neighbors and friends around who stopped by almost daily and especially on the weekends and my grandmother or mother would always offer anyone who stopped by a plate of food. I saw how happy people would get after being offered a meal. Their smiles would get bigger and eyes happier. This stood out to me and taught me that food can bring people together and bring joy and pretty much since then its been my love language. It makes me happy to feed people and see them happy enjoying my food. I learned what i could from watching my grandmother, mother, and aunt cook puerto rican food. I eventually moved to Miami with my dad who is from Nicaragua and watched my stepmom and her mom cook nicaraguan food. I also ate a lot of Cuban food while living in Miami. I truly believe that all latin foods are beautiful, flavorful and unique. I took what i’ve learned along the years and established my own way of cooking. When making dinner for my family I love to mix cultures and take something from each one and serve a flavorful meal. Sometimes its a typical Nicaraguan dish, or Puerto Rican dish but sometimes Ill make rice like Puerto Ricans do, Steak like Nicaraguans do and Salsa like Cubans do. Why not! I’ve always wanted to be a part of the food business and share all the goodness that Latin food offers. I was always told that I make really good beef empanadas and with that idea The Latin Cow was born. A way to share what the Latin community can offer when it comes to food! I hope to bring joy and smiles with each bite that The Latin Cow offers.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road wasnt particulary smooth. Figuring out what licenses/certificates were needed took me a very long time, almost a year. It was tough getting accurate information from people. After many phone calls and emails and taking and passing the Food Manager Safety test, I finally figured it all out. If i am going to sell food to people, I want to do it the right way according to the law and I want people to know that all health and safety measures are being followed!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
When I started The Latin Cow I only intended to do festivals and markets. Since then I have branched out into Catering and intend to offer meal prepping in the future. I think my Beef Empandas and Roasted Pork sandwich stand out the most and will always be my favorite items on the menu. I always offer homemade salsa with the Beef Empandas as well. It may sound cliche or corny but i genuinely prepare all my food with LOVE and call me crazy but i think that will always be the secret ingredient that will make anything taste good.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
My hope is that people love my food and know that its prepared with care and love!
