Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesús Gómez.
Hi Jesús, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I studied a technical career in social communication and journalism and worked for several media in Colombia; in December 2019, I decided to travel to Singapore to work in an American shipping company. I returned to my country after COVID and closed all the airports in the world; there, my life became boring because I had no work and had to be locked at home. I started recording videos more often to cheer people up through a screen; before the pandemic, my best friend Johana taught me to be a barista. I was passionate about coffee, and after a year, I finally returned to work! This time in an international hotel in Cali, Colombia. The experiences that I had here were enjoyable, with ups and downs. I went through a love relationship that hurt me greatly, but then I learned that we are passengers in people’s lives. I continued to make my life surrounded by my family and the people I love; then, I received a job offer to work in Qatar; when they mentioned it to me, I did not know that country existed. After my trip to Singapore, I discovered I wanted to travel and learn new cultures, so why not take this opportunity? I accepted and flew to Qatar before the World Cup. I met incredibly wonderful people and had a lot of fun but also a lot of anguish and sadness; living more than 13,000 kilometers away from your country is not easy but very challenging. Being in Qatar, after a year, I began to feel stagnant and that where I was, there were no opportunities to grow or continue advancing as a person or professional. Therefore, I decided to resign and return to Colombia, but not without a trick up my sleeve; I had received 3 juicy offers for UAE and challenging. I love challenges. I returned to Colombia to surprise my family, and I was with them for about a month before flying to the Middle East again, this time to Dubai; here I am starting. It has not been easy, but I know I can do this and more; we must always keep in mind our goals and get up to meet them.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Several; I think the most recent one was an accident I had in Qatar when I fell while working, and I had to handle the situation alone without anyone’s help, bleeding and in an Arab country where you have to explain everything in English and not having a company or a person to take charge was very complex.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The truth is that I do a little bit of everything. I am a social communicator, content creator, and barista, and I have worked in the hospitality industry for over ten years. I like to make people laugh and have fun, make them feel good, and that makes me feel good; it makes me feel good what I have achieved in social networks to do social causes, help people in need, be known for my joy, for my smile to make people happy and always have a topic for everything, have a critical but impartial opinion.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
They don’t usually know that I am a journalist by profession. I am passionate about dancing and learning new things every day.
