Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanne Sampson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi my name is Joanne and I was born and lived in Washington, DC. for 59 years, and in 2014 I moved from there to Orlando, Florida. My move to Florida opened up a different kind of creativity in me that I hadn’t been aware of before. I came from a family of artists down from my mom, her two brothers, my dad, my maternal grandmother, and several of my brothers. I previously explored and lived out some of my artistical talents being a seamstress, drawing, and a makeup artist for several major cosmetic lines.
As I stated earlier, my move to Florida opened up this creativity in me. Surprisingly it was a fascination with paper. I taught myself how to make paper flowers. I made cards with flowers, I did mix media on canvas with flowers, and wire sculptures with paper flowers, etc. I was pretty much obsessed with using paper as my medium for flowers. I didn’t have in my mind at the time to sell my creations, I would just come home from my job or on my days off and play really with paper. Then, a shift happens when a co-worker asked me if I could make faces on posters that her dance troop would carry for a dance routine during one of their performances. I was so excited that I had that opportunity to show my talent. This was my start of using cardboard to design faces for those posters. I taught myself how to use the different types of cardboard and I would mold it into whatever I wanted for a particular design. That was my start in using cardboard as another medium. So, I was now doing recyclable art by using cardboard. I became really good with different kinds of materials to design and create art. Friends and family would tell me that what I did was museum-worthy which really surprised me. So fast forward I now have my business which is called, Creative Vision Designz, LLC., and I make floral designs, and character designs with cardboard, I also use shrink plastic to create with, and I make jewelry, and I decoupage on plates and bowls with paper and fabric. Everything I create I have taught myself; I am a self-taught artist, and I am so grateful for the ability to use what I was born with and to share with others my art.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my challenges was lack of space for all the products I collected over the years. My bedroom was my studio and bedroom. And thanks to my sister (we live together) she invested in a storage room for me to put my inventory in.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the owner and Creative Designer of hand-designed forms by using paper, cardboard, and plastic. I am known for my ability to use these mediums ie paper, cardboard, and plastic that some people had never seen it used the way I do.
I am most proud of the many clients that trusted me with the products I’ve created for them.
I think what sets me apart, is that I challenge myself to create something that’s out of my comfort zone to satisfy a client! It’s all about the client.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Keeping your word, following through, and giving quality work.
