Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Sandusky.
Hi Joe, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started playing guitar when I was 13, I’m 51 now. I started as a rock player, then got into blues and then jazz. In college I focused on note reading, jazz improv and classical guitar. I started teaching at age 20 as part of my income, the rest was performing. I performed at all around Orlando mostly reading shows and some “subbing” in bands. I also later worked for Disney and Carnival Cruise Lines. Around 2000 I decided to focus more on teaching and it became the majority of my income. I love teaching, and helping my students learn and love music. I owned a music store in Longwood called “High Note Music”. I sold High Note and went to work for Parke House Academy, a private elementary school in Winter Park. It was great experience teaching general music to children. Three years later I moved to Winter Patk High where I taught only guitar for 14 years. It was a great challenge building the program, but I was growing as a teacher and realized I wanted to go back to private one on one lessons to really help students learn in an approach that is custom to their ability and goals. So I started the my Online Guitar lessons.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have changed approaches and have grown as a teacher over the last 30 years. Teaching is very natural to me, so it’s not really a struggle.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m very good at explaining and breaking down what I know. if I can do it, I can teach anyone to do it. I have many ways of explaining concepts, I have had many successful students over the years I taught Sam Dobkin of Tivecta, Jacob Sawyer of Not Enough Space and Ethen Stalbaum who is a professional musician now living in Texas. I can help the complete beginner or someone who’s played for years.
How do you think about happiness?
Seeing my students succeed. I love music and I love spreading that love.
