Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Schmidt
Hi Joe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was always interested in sports from the time I was young, but I was always hindered due to my lack of size and confidence. Growing up in Jacksonville Florida, I was a two sport athlete in high school, my favorite of the two being football. Unfortunately due to only being 135lbs at the age of 18 in a very competitive area I was very overlooked and had an extreme lack of confidence in myself. I especially had a lack of confidence in the weight room because I was the weakest person on the team. Going into my senior year I wanted to make a change and decided to try putting more time in the weight room regardless of my insecurities. After suffering an injury that cut my senior season short I focused my competitive energy into weight lifting. Through my first year in college, I dove into this new found passion and turned what was once a big insecurity of mine into one of my biggest passions and strengths. I educated myself thoroughly through that year and eventually ended up transferring to UCF and majoring in Sport and Exercise Science. Through this time I also worked with many fitness brands such as Wolfpack athletics, 1UP Nutrition, and myprotein. From there I honed my training abilities, interned and worked at spectrum sports performance, helping me gain experience with all sorts of people from kids to professional athletes. Upon graduating, I ended up starting my own independent training business where I have been training all kinds of people in the Orlando area and loving every moment of it!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I was never a natural when it came to the fitness world, in fact I was probably the last person you would expect to be doing this for a living today. I also started my business during one of the hardest times to start a personal training business, in 2020. I had a hard time learning the business end of things, and learning where to find and how to bring in new clients.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a personal trainer who has worked with people from kids to professional athletes. My specialty would be helping people build muscle.
What I’m most proud of is helping people build confidence in themselves and improve their lives. I truly believe the confidence you gain from fitness can permeate to all areas of life because that’s what it did to me. I love helping people not only get healthier but live happier lives.
I believe my knowledge base sets myself apart. I have extensive certifications and experience along with my degree that help me tailor training programs to each individual. I can pull from each of those different experiences to help find what is best for that person.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The biggest thing is being personable and living what you preach. You can have all the knowledge in the world but if you don’t represent what you’re saying you can help them with then you won’t be successful. You should be an example for your clients. On the other end you can be the best trainer in the world, but if you can’t be personable and make it an enjoyable experience then you won’t keep your clients. It’s about making the process enjoyable for your clients and yourself! If you’re having fun they’re more likely to have fun and if people enjoy the session along with their results they will come back.
