Today we’d like to introduce you to John Nguyen
Hi John, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Which story I think is the bigger question. I was born in Southern California, received my Bachelors in Communications, worked at Disneyland, and have spent over 20 years of my life struggling with work. In the span of 20 years, I have worked over 50 different jobs ranging from volunteer to full time corporate roles. Today, my goal is to cut the bs, focus on my passion, not what is expected of me, but where I can work and smile at the same time. I love working with groups, spending time with family, and above all, I love music and adventure. Nothing catapults my life more than the feeling of being alive, feeling afraid, excited, exhausted, thrilled from discovery, and the joy of accomplishment. True adventure. My music, well, my mother was a piano teacher so I heard live music long before I could even speak. In addition to playing classical guitar and piano, music is my heart, while adventure defines my soul. Cooking and baking takes up a lot of my time but that’s a different story. For the sake of where I got today, I got here from refusing to give up. I don’t want a norm, I want purpose, and that purpose is what drives me
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road when I was married was a smooth one, but financial challenges, an emotional affair, and me never truly seeing my partner eye-to-eye for ten years put the biggest dent in the road I have ever experienced. Coupled with a divorce during COVID, life seemed like it was over. I regrettably left her, moved to a trailer home in Florida, counting down the days which I deserved this life from my horrible choices. Sometimes I tried to stay up for as long as I could at night so I don’t have to live to see the next day. I was alone, no work, no purpose. Fortunately, hope came along. I was picked up by a wonderful old acquaintance who invited me in to her life. What started as a casual drink grew to a dependable roommate, then blossomed in to a romantic relationship. Today we live together under the same roof with the hopes of bettering ourselves and learning to be the best versions of ourselves.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am most proud of my creativity. It is what drives me and I find that it yields some fantastic results. What makes me different is that I own up to my responsibilities. Therefore I’m confidence, willing to face consequences. I am also a fast learner, always pushing harder than the person next to me. I am not afraid to make a splash at work. I don’t do if for attention. I do it for them.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Listening. And I mean TRULY listening with not just your ears, but also with your eyes, your touch, from your heart, all of it. Hone in on what is happening. Learn how to react, what and WHY certain things make you feel the way you do. EXPERIENCE!!! Stop with being glued to your phone all the time. You think watching a 6 second video is the highlight of your day? Try .5 seconds of looking up. You will never know what you’ll experience.
