Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Garcia.
Karla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started baking cakes from home in 2015. It was always something that I wanted to do. Actually, in 2008, I went to a culinary school looking for a pastry program so that I could get a degree, but the schedule for the pastry classes wasn’t going to work for me so the school convinced me to still get into the school and take a culinary Associates Degree. Which I did and graduated from at Le Cordon Bleu academy in Orlando. After that, I worked for Universal studios as a cook in a few of their restaurants and then went on to work for the biggest Marriott in the world at that time (Orlando World Center Marriott)as a cook and worked my way up to be a supervisor in the banquet kitchen.
Buy pastry was always in the back of my head. Fast forward to 2015, I wanted to bake my daughter Lexi her 1st bday cake. So I decided to take a local baking class.
Now here I am today Owner of Sweets by Karla Cakes and supplies store. My shop was actually previously owned by a friend of mines Ana Vargas cakes a very talented Venezuela cake artist whom I admire.
She sold it to me in 2019.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth at all, especially nine months after owning the shop covid hit and we lost a lot of money. We had to close our store for two weeks. Everything was very sad and turning sour for us. But by the grace of God, we decided to reopen against all odds. Worked hard to keep the business going and honestly, we’ve been doing amazingly good. I think our biggest struggle was the pandemic.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in making cakes for all occasions. Also, I’ve worked all of my life in the tourist industry before owning my shop… so good customer service is something that I learned thru the years of working in hospitality and I keep giving my customers that kind of service. I’m proud of how far I’ve gotten as a cake decorator and also as a Teacher to my employees, students, interns and clients. I love teaching what I know and seeing amazing results. What sets me apart is my personality… humble and always wanting to help and teach!
