Hi Kayla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My culinary journey began at a young age when I discovered my love for cooking. I vividly remember making my first dish, a simple plate of scrambled eggs, under the guidance of my Louisiana-born grandmother. She was a talented community caterer and a nurturing mentor who encouraged me to explore the culinary world. Those early experiences in the kitchen ignited a passion that has continued to grow.
As I grew older, I was drawn to the flavors and traditions of my Caribbean and Southern roots. I spent countless hours assisting my maternal great-grandmother in preparing feasts for special occasions, meticulously chopping collard greens, peeling sweet potatoes, and infusing love into every dish. My mother also played a significant role in my culinary development, teaching me to add my flare to the recipes and experiment with new flavors and techniques. Through her guidance, I learned the art of improvisation and the importance of infusing my personal touch into the dishes I created. As a college student, I started Kulinary Kay in 2019 as a platform to share the meals I cooked with my fellow students. It was a way for me to document my culinary experiments and provide inspiration for others in similar situations. Little did I know that this would eventually evolve into something much greater. As I continued to share my recipes and culinary adventures, I began receiving positive feedback and requests for more. People were intrigued by my dishes. It was through these interactions that I realized my passion for cooking had the potential to blossom into a full-fledged business. To support my entrepreneurial spirit, I obtained a degree in integrated business and am now pursuing an MBA with a minor in Business Analytics.
Today, I am proud to be the owner, operator, and head chef of Kulinary Kay LLC, where I combine my culinary expertise with my background in business to offer exceptional catering services. I take pride in curating unique menus, infusing them with a fusion of flavors, and providing outstanding service to each client. My journey from a young aspiring cook to a successful caterer has been fulfilling, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my passion for food with others.
This journey has taught me the importance of following my dreams, embracing my cultural heritage, and infusing love and authenticity into every dish I create. We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has been far from smooth. I faced my fair share of struggles and self-doubt along the way, particularly in dealing with imposter syndrome and questioning whether this path was my calling from God. It’s a common challenge that many entrepreneurs and creative individuals face, and I was not exempt from it.
Starting Kulinary Kay LLC was a leap of faith, and there were moments when I questioned my abilities and wondered if I was truly qualified to run a catering business. I often compared myself to others with formal culinary training or extensive experience in the industry. This self-doubt sometimes hindered my confidence and made embracing my unique journey and skillset challenging.
Sometimes I felt like an imposter, wondering if I deserved the recognition and success I was starting to achieve. However, through perseverance and a supportive network, I learned to overcome these doubts and embrace that my journey was unique to me. I reminded myself that my passion for food, creativity, and commitment to delivering exceptional experiences set me apart.
Seeking guidance and support from mentors and fellow entrepreneurs played a crucial role in overcoming these struggles. Their insights, encouragement, and shared experiences helped me realize that imposter syndrome is a common hurdle that can be overcome with self-belief, continuous learning, and a willingness to adapt and grow.
Ultimately, my faith and trust in God’s plan for my life also helped me navigate through these challenges. I sought guidance in prayer and assurance that I was on the right path. Through reflection and introspection, I understood that my struggles and doubts were part of the journey and an opportunity for personal and spiritual growth. While the road has not always been smooth, I now see those struggles as valuable lessons that have shaped me into a stronger and more resilient individual. They have reinforced my commitment to excellence, humbled me, and reminded me to lean on my faith in times of uncertainty.

I have always been my toughest critic, constantly striving for perfection and pushing myself to go above and beyond. This drive for excellence fuels my dedication to improve and deliver exceptional experiences to my clients continuously. It is a surprise to many that I am constantly evaluating my performance, analyzing every detail, and seeking ways to enhance my craft behind the scenes.
