Today we’d like to introduce you to Keila Maloney.
Hi Keila, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Keila “KP” Maloney and I am a writer of many forms. I started writing poetry when I was 11 and finally published my first novel ‘Why I Let Go’ in September. I was born September 1994 in South Florida and it wasn’t easy because I was born with a disability called Cerebral Palsy which affects my speech and motor skills. Because of this, I had to be creative all my life. Every task became a game and I didn’t like to lose. Adjusting to life this way led me to graduating with my bachelors degree in business from FIU in August 2018. Life has and will never be easy but I make it fun. I spend a lot of time in Orlando because my family and friends live there. I published my book while I was in Orlando and a piece of who I am is in that city. Now, as I work on my poetry book that will be available in December, I’ve been reflecting on my journey. I’m excited to see what game life offers me next.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I mentioned before, having a disability is an obstacle in itself. Luckily, I was born with this superpower and have been making the most of it ever since. All the bumps in the road were just another lift to succeeding and that’s the way I view it. Everyone has struggles but I make mine work for and not against me. I’ve been easily judged and counted out but I keep going because I know my purpose is bigger.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a writer and I’ve written music for an EP, have poems that have been published, and now I have a novel. I’m proud of all my work but having my name on a book is really the highlight right now. Mostly, I’m known for my poetry because I’ve been doing it the longest. I have a poetry page (IG: kadencepoetry) and I post almost every Wednesday and Sunday. I love writing so if I can do that then I’m in my happy place.
What are your plans for the future?
My greatest dream right now is to have my writing acknowledged. There is nothing more that I would love to do than write and make a career out of it. I should have three published books out by March and all I need is one shot to display my talent. If I get that, anything is possible.
