Check Out Kenslie McGuire’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenslie McGuire.

Hi Kenslie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I studied graphic design in school, but my first job out of college ended up having more photography than design work. This allowed me to practice photography weekly and my photo skills developed more than my design skills. I moved from my first design job in-house to working at an ad agency. At the agency, I spent 5 years serving as the art & photography director. This time allowed me to learn from my all my coworkers on so many subjects bettering my photo, creative direction, and social media skills. It came to the point where I felt that all my dreams & goals could only be accomplished through going freelance! It was the scariest move I’ve ever made, but I make the jump to work for myself. I’m so thankful for all the wonderful experiences I’ve had since making the decision to freelance.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
During my last year the agency I dealt with a lot of discrimination and this pushed me to realize a transition was coming in my life. At the time I didn’t know what was next and it was difficult to make it through that time. The first few months of freelance were scary of course but I just had to stay the path, put out leads, and stay positive!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Coming from a design background, I love any opportunity to creative direct what I shoot! I tend to be known for my slice-of-life, nostalgic feeling photos no matter the subject/genre. I specialize in working with brands to create social media content which can range from food & beverage, luxury travel, fashion, etc. When the project aligns with my personal brand, I use my photography skills to partner with companies on influencer campaigns.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
A dear artist friend of mine recommended the book “The Artist Way” to me when I was struggling the most at the ad agency. This book truly changed my life. I recommend anyone in a creative career or considering any kind of creative path to read it!
