Today we’d like to introduce you to Las Chicas del Crime.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, one day we were all together, and Osa had the idea of a podcast about true crime. All three of us have a strong interest in the topic and found ourselves talking about it a lot, to begin with. So one day Osa asked us if we wanted to create a podcast and we just ran with it. The idea of doing cases in Spanish came out of the desire to want to shed more light on victims of color in countries where they don’t receive the recognition or justice they deserve. Being that all three of us are Latina from different countries we thought it would be great to shine light in our individual communities as well.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
TECHNOLOGYYYYY! It has been the biggest hurdle to overcome especially since Kat and Osa both live in Tampa and Jennifer lives in Orlando. Therefore the recordings are done virtually most times and things haven’t always worked out well. Also working as a group of three can be hard as we all have full-time lives outside of this project. However, we’ve made it work and it’s been well worth it!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Kat has two jobs. She works as an Account Manager for a data company, She also is a photographer (self-taught) & a babysitter.
Osa works full-time running and working house cleaning service and is a full-time mom!
Jennifer works full-time as a recruiter and is in graduate school to become a clinical mental health counselor. She is also a full-time mom.
As a group what sets us apart from others is that we are very hardworking and original with our work and content. We truly advocate for a population that is in need of help and deserves justice. We don’t just do this to be trendy or cool like podcasts have become. We saw a serious issue and want to help change that however we can. We figured this would be a good way to help shine light on unrepresented victims and get our message across on a larger scale.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Well, this will be a split answer regarding Tampa and Orlando.
Osa loves Orlandos brunch spots, she says Orlando has better food spots. Kat lovessssss her city of Tampa but she does enjoy her parts of Orlando as well. She was recently in town for the classic weekend and was out having a great time! Jennifer was born and raised in the city beautiful, she really loves the food spots as well, she’s known for giving all of her friends suggestions 🙂 I love the representation of the Latino community that has grown within Orlando. She also enjoys being a short drive to the beaches!
We all safely agree that we dislike the influx of population over the last two years because of COVID but seeing the city strive has been great!
