Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Watts.
Laura, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Plush Paws has grown exponentially and has expanded since this article! I purchased commercial property in November of 2019 and shortly after that, found out I was pregnant with my first child, so I did a build-out of my new facility while expecting! It was crazy, chaotic and extremely stressful but I am proud to say Plush Paws has flourished into offering Doggy Daycare as well as a full store and boutique full of 100% Natural and Organic goodies for your pet, ranging from food to treats, toys and more. Plush Paws has won ‘Best Pet Salon of Orlando’ every year since 2015, is voted “Neighborhood Favorite” on Nextdoor and voted “Best of Yelp” since 2017. We stayed strong during the Covid19 Quarantine and stayed committed to serving our community with curbside pick up and drop off. We also run a 100% Green facility to keep pets happy and healthy while in our care.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Shortly after opening Plush Paws back in September of 2010, I was involved in a major car accident in December of 2010, which led to hospitalization, reconstructive surgery and ultimately, the closing of my first location. It took years to rebuild not only my life but also my business. But perseverance and the will to succeed amongst the strength and support of my amazing team over the years has led Plush Paws into the local spotlight and has dubbed us “a local gem.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Most people don’t know this about me but I have a background in art and Professional Photography. I had a small photography side business in my early twenties before starting Plush Paws. I also have been doing art most of my life. From drawing to painting and sculpting, I had most of my art entered into local art festivals for at least ten years or so, I think what sets me apart from others is my passion for not only the animals but their people as well. I have a natural desire to want to take care of people and have always been a huge animal lover my entire life. Relationships and trust are what set Plush Paws apart from other facilities.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Hmm… Well, first and foremost, do your research! Make sure you are starting what will ultimately be a highly demanding, profitable business model that a large percentage of people will need and want. Small niche businesses tend to fail because most people don’t need the service. Pet grooming will always be in demand and people will always need their pets cared for!
Making sure you have a good accountant, business attorney and even a consultant will work greatly in your favor and ultimately help drive your long-term success as well! You will make mistakes along the way but learn from them and grow organically. Never get too big for your britches and always remain humble.
