Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee McCoy.
Hi Lee, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Mississippi. I joined the military in 1992 and served 24 years until I retired in 2016. During my military careers as a civil engineer, I deployed four times to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and finally Afghanistan in 2012, where I trained Afghan engineers.
My Youtube journey begins in 2015 from my love for film and the overall movie going experience, so I created my channel called Drumdums. It started as just a hobby but quickly grew into something bigger thanks to the horror niche that I gravitated toward. Around 2020 I started attending press screenings which eventually led to being Rotten Tomatoes certified shortly after. I currently have over 66K subscribers on my Youtube channel.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Concerning my military career, their were definitely some struggles. Being away from your family is hard and you really have to adjust to it. You’re also constantly meeting new people every few years due to frequent PCS moves. Sometimes you’re a foreigner in a different country, so you have to adjust to their way of life.
I think the biggest struggles come from not initially understanding how growth works in Youtube, and that there will be ebbs and flows. You have to be accepting of that stuff. I’m a competitive person who loved to push himself, and you can find yourself comparing your journey to others who are definitely going to be more successful. Also having a normal day job and a somewhat successful Youtube channel can present challenges time wise.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My current “stable” job is in apartment maintenance. I am a senior technician with skills in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and structural. It’s a very versatile career path. I’m proud of the fact that when I started this job, I had very little experience in all of these trades outside of structural. Now I’m a certified HVAC technician.
I think what can set me apart from others is my love of art, and the fact that I’ve forged a monetary and creative path in that direction as well.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
My entire life is built around collaboration. My day job requires me to work with others to get the job done because sometimes it’s larger than just one person.
On the Youtube side of things, collaboration is almost essential in order to climb the ladder and gain a following.
Finally, my wife and I are very busy people. We constantly collaborate with each other to achieve our own goals. My wife is a self published writer having recently written a children’s book titled Delilah Versus the Ghastly Grim.
