Check Out Marie Dean’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Dean.

Hi Marie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Since I was a little girl I’ve always dreamed of having my own bakery or maybe a baking show. I used to pretend I was on tv and would explain the recipe & ingredients as I added them to an imaginary audience (or my cat as long as she would be interested). So once I retired from working at the Veterans Hospital I thought it was a great time to do what I love, and I love baking. I also love how happy people are when you give them a cookie! So, Bluebird Bakery was born.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s not always easy having a home bakery. We are much more restricted in what we are allowed to sell. For instance, we are limited to selling only items that don’t require refrigeration. I had a hard time finding a delicious buttercream frosting that didn’t have butter in it. But all in all, with the outstanding support I’ve gotten from family & friends, it hasn’t been too bad.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Before I started my bakery, I worked as a supervisory nuclear medicine technologist. We performed scans like bone scans, stress tests & PET scans to name a few.
But my secret passion was baking. I would often go home & bake after a hard day at work. It was my way of relaxing.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I took a small risk opening my bakery. I knew people liked what I baked but I didn’t know if they would pay for it. I have some very loyal friends & customers who have really helped me see that I can do this.
I think it’s important to take risks. How do you know if you can do it unless you step out of your comfort zone and try. Even if it doesn’t work out, you still learned from it.
