Today we’d like to introduce you to Marla E
Hi Marla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been a creator for over 25 years in the Orlando area. My journey has been one of passion, persistence, and creativity. From the very beginning, I was determined to make my mark in the art world. I would personally visit galleries, introduce myself to owners, and ask them to showcase my work. Alongside this, I collaborated with muralists and faux artists until 2000, when I officially incorporated my business and launched Marla E Inc.
Through my business, I’ve had the pleasure of working with designers, homeowners, and businesses on a variety of artistic projects. My philosophy is simple: art belongs everywhere. Over the years, I’ve created murals, sculptures, installations, and even wearable art. In 2016, a pivotal moment in my career came when I was named Artist of the Year for Osceola County. This recognition propelled me further into the spotlight.
Around this time, I partnered with gallerist Boris Garbe from Mills Gallery. Together, we became a driving force in Orlando’s art scene, hosting podcasts like Live Art (produced by the Timucua Foundation) and Kiss My Art, which ran for four years. These platforms allowed us to celebrate art and connect with the community in meaningful ways.
One of my proudest achievements was having my artwork permanently displayed on the 111 Building in downtown Orlando, which is a high-rise building with my art being 4 stories high on it. Beyond creating art, I’ve always believed in giving back. I’ve worked with students of all ages and abilities, donated to charities, and supported causes close to my heart.
My journey has been about more than just creating; it’s about connecting people through art and leaving a lasting impact on my community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey hasn’t been without its challenges. In 2010, my world was turned upside down when I lost my husband. Suddenly, I found myself navigating life as a grieving widow while also trying to sustain myself as an artist. It was a delicate balance—creating art to support myself while striving to bring joy to others through my work. During that time, I adopted a philosophy that shaped the way I approached both my art and my life: I chose to honor my husband through my creations and embrace the fleeting nature of life. Losing him made me acutely aware of how precious our time is, and I vowed to live fully and authentically.
In my pursuit of making a living as an artist, I threw myself into countless ventures and opportunities, each one teaching me something new and pushing me forward in unexpected ways. I got into all kinds of good trouble along the way—taking risks, experimenting, and growing both personally and professionally. Those experiences shaped me into the person and artist I am today.
Now, as I reflect on my journey, I feel nothing but gratitude for everything I’ve been through—the highs, the lows, and everything in between. It’s all led me to this moment, where I’ve come to realize one simple truth: art is everywhere. It’s in the ordinary and extraordinary alike, and it’s my mission to share that vision with you. Through my work, I want to show you the beauty and creativity that surrounds us every day.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
On an artistic level, I’m involved in so many exciting ventures. My fine art is showcased in several galleries, and I also run my own mural and faux finishing business, Marla E Inc., which has been a rewarding and creative endeavor. Beyond that, I’ve been having a blast with performance art—painting live on dresses worn by models at events, which brings a whole new dimension to my work. Recently, I’ve also started creating my own line of jewelry, adding another layer of creativity to my artistic expression.
As for my paintings, they are what I’m most known for. They’re bold, semi-abstract, and multidimensional, designed to captivate and immerse the viewer. Each piece is an exploration of texture, color, and space, reflecting my passion for pushing boundaries and connecting with people through art.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
My philosophy is simple: art is everywhere. By staying passionate, honoring my creative integrity, and continuously exploring new ideas, I’ve built a fulfilling career that aligns with who I am. Success for me is not just about recognition—it’s about sharing beauty and inspiring others through everything I do.
Speaking of success, I’m thrilled to share that I’m about to have a solo show at the Mills Gallery this May, curated by my dear friend Boris Garbe. This exhibition is particularly exciting because I’ll be unveiling my new art form, which I’ve coined sculptural paintings. These works came about purely by accident but have evolved into something revolutionary—combining bold, multidimensional aesthetics with a fresh perspective on artistic expression.
This collection represents my growth as an artist and demonstrates to Orlando—and the world—that I’m constantly pushing boundaries. My sculptural paintings are both innovative and beautiful, and I can’t wait to showcase them in this solo exhibition. It’s a proud moment that reflects how far I’ve come and how much I’ve embraced every opportunity to evolve creatively.
