Check Out Megan Michals’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Michals.

Hi Megan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’m in recovery from alcohol addiction. I was going through a nasty divorce February 2021 when I was hired by the State of Florida to work as a social worker in a men’s prison. I also began taking my recovery seriously and took my last drink on June 22, 2021. That same summer I started working towards my master’s in criminal justice. While working in the prison, I met dozens of men who are hopeless and addicted to drugs and alcohol. Many have no place to go when they are released. There is nothing like Orlando Empowerment Corporation in the central Florida area. My goal is to open an eight-bed home for men leaving prison. This will be a safe haven for them to reside for up to a year while they get on their feet. The American justice system is designed to punish- not rehabilitate and our corporation is going to bridge that gap. We are in the very early stages and have begun to find raise. I also applied for our 501c3 status which will allow for more fundraising Opportunities While remaining tax-exempt.

Most importantly I’m still sober and still motivated to help change lives in the central Florida area and beyond.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No! This is the first time I’ve been involved in a business like this. Money, for now, is our biggest obstacle.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a social worker with a background in child welfare and corrections. I’m most proud of my work in corrections and my education which includes my current grad school program.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
That everyone deserves a second chance
