Hello Melissa The Hair Witch, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I am a Reiki Healer and Hair Stylist who goes by the name Melissa The Hair Witch! I have been in the beauty industry for over 10 years now. I’ve been through so much in these past few years as most of us have, and it got me thinking about my purpose. I love making people (specifically women & LGBTQIA+ babes) feel beautiful and special, but I knew that there was more I could offer. Over a year ago I got my certification for Energy Healing and that’s what I brought to my salon! I work with crystals, oils and my intuition to create a calming and restorative service that I often explain as a massage for your soul.
My sister and I both mix hair and healing at our salon Hair Magic Studio, and it’s the greatest blessing. Our clients have received so much value from us bringing in something new to our small town in Titusville and we are forever grateful for the love and support! My clients are actually who gave me my name. They have joked with me by calling me a “magician” and having “magic hands” so going into actual healing techniques alongside my hair transformations just made sense. I love the word “WITCH” because it describes a Woman In Total Control of Herself, and that’s exactly how my clients feel after a session with me. I believe in all the magic and wonder of the world and have had so much fun sharing it!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I found that my biggest struggle was being authentic and true to myself. In earlier years of my career I was shamed about my beliefs and made to think that I needed to blend in in order to be a successful stylist, In our area we don’t have many people outwardly owning their magic, spirituality, queerness, blackness, etc. It can be hard to express yourself when you receive hate and shame for it. Hair Magic Studio was born in 2020 after the lockdown from the pandemic and there was no better time to show the world who I was than when I started owning my very own business. This gave me the confidence to let my heart shine.
Our salon is full of a lot of things some might consider “woo woo”, we love astrology, and no topic is off limits!
Our clients became more like family. I feel that these deep connections would have never happened if I wasn’t fully myself. I ended up attracting people who were interested in the same things, as well as people who were craving the type of love and healing that I’m now able to provide. So if you’re reading this and are afraid of doing something a little different or you’re afraid that you won’t be successful just the way you are, I am living proof that you can do it!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ll tell you what goes into a Reiki session! First, we’ll start with a little chat to figure out what you’d like to focus on.
Anything from confidence and self-love, to maybe needing a push to get closer to your goals. Even heartbreak, or something more physical like back pain or a tummy ache. Once we establish your goals, then I’ll have you either lay down on our massage bed or lean back in the shampoo bowl for a conditioning treatment while the healing happens. From there I turn on relaxing music, and all you have to do is close your eyes, take a deep breath, and be open to the reiki energy. Reiki is defined as a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. I mostly hover my hands over you while intuitively seeing what your different chakra points have to say. Often, I will place certain crystals over different areas.
You’ll also be able to enjoy the vibrations and sounds of my singing bowls as well as the scents of different oils that are aligned with what you need. Often people will see visions, feel tingles or warmth, see different colors, etc. The end of our session is my favorite part, I get to tell you what I felt from your energy! Some people have spirit come through, some get different mantras to focus on, and I get to tell you about your homework on how to keep your energy radiant! This is something a lot of my clients like to get done whenever they do their haircut or color, while others treat it more as a once-in-a-while self-care splurge. Reiki is completely customizable and perfect for anyone who needs to slow down a little bit. It’s my absolutely favorite service I provide, and I love to help in my guest’s healing journey!
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
The main things I focus on are Self-care and healing, so I have to make sure I am pouring into myself all the time, that way I still have magic left for my clients. The better I feel, the better I can make you feel! A big thing with this is boundaries! The best resource I’ve found that helps me create and honor my boundaries is the book Set Boundaries, Find Peace by Nedra Glover Tawwab.
She finds a way to make boundaries seem less intimidating and scary and more like a means of love. I also must shout out my beautiful mentor Katie Alyse (@iamkatiealyse)! She was my beauty school teacher and my Reiki Master who taught me all of this. If you are interested in doing what I do she can help get you there!
