Check Out Nathan Sindelar’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Sindelar. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Magnesium Studios and Records is owned and operated by Nathan Sindelar and Ray Satcher. Nathan is an Orlando Native and 2018 Full Sail Recording Arts Alumni. Ray is a seasoned musician and visionary behind the studio’s overall message: of bringing a true analog-driven and comfortable feel back to commercial recording studios. Nathan and Ray’s vision is to help artists and creatives access and harness the most potential out of their art and themselves by creating a sort of sanctuary for artists to be vulnerable and giving access to the tools to allow them to explore.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Magnesium Studios was originally located in South Cocoa Beach under the name Wrong Planet Studios. It was a hub for local talent and a hidden gem on the beach. Unfortunately, when covid 19 happened, business and bookings stopped. Ray was afraid of the future of the studio until he met Nathan by chance. And by chance, we need he happened to move into the house next door. After Ray and Nathan Met, they knew it was not by chance. Immediately they went into business together, and Nathan took operations to his hometown of Orlando.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Nathan Sindelar is a professional Audio Recording Engineer, Music Producer, and credited Film Sound Designer. Before becoming a Co-Owner and Operator of Magnesium Studios and Record Shop, Nathan had always been an artist and musician first. Although he plays multiple instruments, his main instrument is the drums and percussion. Nathan has been playing drums since the age of 5, taking formal lessons most of his teenage life. Originally pursuing aviation for a career as a teenager, even soloing in an airplane before having his driver’s license in a car, and going on to learn to fly helicopters. Nathan supplemented his pursuit of aviation in his late teens with a part-time sales job inside local tourist traps and hotels, while also drumming for friend’s home recording sessions on the weekends. One day at one of the hotels he was working a man, who he would later find out to be Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys, approached his sales desk and gave him advice that would change his life forever. Talking him out of pursuing a career as a pilot (which had since for the last year become a burden and stressful, and Nathan realized he no longer wanted to be a pilot, and would rather even be more content as a musician) or session drummer, Bruce felt compelled to put Nathan on the track to become an engineer and producer. Two weeks later, Nathan quit his job and began the process of enrolling at Full Sail University. A local audio engineering and music college Nathan had always heard about growing up. From not knowing how to operate pro tools or understanding gain versus volume in 2016 to graduating in 2018 and becoming a credited sound designer on a feature film, distributed by Buffalo 8 in 2020. Now Nathan is expanding on his love of creating music and teaching the workings and beauty of classic gear and ways of creating music. He does this using the recording engineering skills he is known for, utilizing more vintage techniques and approaches like the ones used in the 70s, 60s, and 50’s on similar or the same gear.

We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
Risk-taking is a requirement when progress is expected. I believe what separates those who achieve their goals from those who don’t are the educated risks they are willing to take to make the changes and break the current cycle that they’re in. The key here is educated risks. Blind risks, although they sometimes pay off, are often times foolish or are only being made because of poor decisions leading up to them.
