Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyeshia Smith.
Nyeshia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and moved to FL at the age of eight. Out of high school, I was really interested in pursuing theatre. I’ve done many shows around town and at well known theaters (Violet: The Garden Theatre, Orlando Shakes, Seussical the Musical: Orlando Repertory Theatre, Disenchanted, The Color Purple: Theater West End etc.) I was recently last seen in Joyful at Walt Disney World’s Epcot for festival of the holidays. When covid struck and everything entertainment shut down, I had no income and was on the brink of being evicted. I Then started my own cupcake business called Ny’s Delights. I learned how to bake from my late grandmother at a young age. And I put that skill to use to get money when all else failed. I aspire to one day be on Broadway and tour the world singing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We hear the quote “God give the toughest battles to His strongest soldiers” and you never know what it truly means until you are THAT soldier. From suicidal thoughts, countless therapy sessions, prescribed antidepressants, prayer partners, self-harm, etc., the road to being genuinely happy and comfortable in myself felt far away and unattainable. It wasn’t always a smooth road but it was worth the ride. I am a stronger person today because of what I’ve been through.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m well known around town for my baking business. I specialize in made from scratch cupcakes. Every cupcake has it’s own unique name and flavor. If you have yet to try them, you’re really missing out! It’s a taste of delight in EVERY bite. I am also a freelance performer. I have done main stage musicals, stage plays, and background vocals for local and well-known artists. I’m proud of the places my talent has taken me and my character has kept me. What sets me apart from others is my ability to learn and obtain things very quickly. I am considered to be an adaptable person with a bubbly and vibrant personality.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
As cliche as it sounds TikTok has been a very helpful app for both my baking and singing profession. Most podcasts I tune into are faith-based themed. (Pastor Michael Todd, Pastor Sarah Jakes, etc.) I also read up on some of my vocal coaches LaRue Howard blogs and posts about vocal agility and health.
