Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Styles.
Patrick, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my Journey on TikTok in 2019 with my best friend convincing me to download the app and get a feel for it. At first, I thought it was ridiculous and didn’t think anything would become of it. She then convinced me to start making videos and told me that I would get a lot of followers if I did. I didn’t believe her at first of course. I began to start making videos, and they weren’t doing that well at first, as I didn’t find yet what was working or gaining traction. Then I finally found something that worked and gained attention and was unique to me, crazy makeup challenges. My videos started taking off and I was getting a lot of views, interaction, and followers within days. It was crazy and I couldn’t believe it was real. I then had to take a break after losing my job as a hairstylist due to the pandemic, which caused a huge mental toll on me. I didn’t post for about 6 months. Fast forward to the beginning of this year, I had my job back and things were going well again, so I decided to get back into TikTok. My videos started taking off again, but they went even more viral than before. It again didn’t feel real and I was blown away. So, I continued making content, and after a couple of months my followers more than doubled and my account started gaining a lot of attention. I really couldn’t have gotten to where I’m at today if it weren’t for my best friend encouraging me to continue and having the support of my family and followers.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
To say it was rough is an understatement. I believe we’ve all felt the rippling effects of this pandemic and what it’s done to our lives. I went from working 6 days a week to nothing within the span of a couple days. It really caused me to spiral into a deep depression, and I didn’t work for 6 months of 2020. While everyone else was making content and having fun on TikTok, I just didn’t have the mental capacity to sit in front of a camera and pretend to be happy and do my challenges. I think that a 6-month break was rough but necessary. It really made me reflect on life and what I value.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In my full-time job, I’m a hairstylist. I’ve been licensed for the last three years and have been working at Ulta Beauty in their salon. I’ve always been known for my color services in the salon, as color is my specialty. I’m always very personal and friendly with my guests when they’re in my chair and I think they definitely appreciate that. In the perspective of my work as a creator on TikTok, I think it’s safe to say that I’m most known for my crazy and eccentric makeup challenges. I always try to be my most genuine self in front of the camera, and I think that’s also something that my followers can really appreciate. I never try to be fake or put on a different personality. I just get in front of the camera and do my challenges and have fun, and I really feel that my followers gravitate to that and love it, which I greatly appreciate.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I have yet to find mentors in the creator world of TikTok. I’ve definitely found people that I’ve been able to bounce ideas off of or get inspired by. Which is something I appreciate nonetheless. I think my parents more so have been amazing mentors for me throughout this process. They’ve given me so much advice with the entire process of creating content and being a healthy and positive creator. I think what’s worked best for me is planning out my content and when I want to do it, because this is on my time at the end of the day, and not feeling obligated to do it, just have fun. Getting in front of the camera and clearing my head before I start a video usually helps best. And always making sure I have time to unwind after filming (and lots of skincare of course). Taking time to focus on yourself is so important and I always make sure I have time for that. If I don’t have time for that, then I don’t have time for anything else.
