Today we’d like to introduce you to Rejane Lima.
Hi Rejane, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi I am Rejane Lima and I am a ceramist. I am from Brazil where I graduated in low but before that I builded a career in hotels sales management customer service, consulting, body language and communications skills, training, and hotels consulting. But then I became a mother and that became my priority in life. I Moved to Germany and there I had my first significant contact with ceramics in westewald the land of good earth clay and rich culture pottery and also the land of stones and strong people. Which gave me so many skills. In one of my trips around Europe, I took a sculpture course in Italy and I felt in love with this art. I made the eye of Michelangelo and that blow me away because I never thought I could do art things with my hands. Besides writing and cooking (In 2014 my family and I lived in Rio for a year and I took a course in a ceramic studio called Barro e cor and there I was completely inspired by Ipanema beach way of life, my wonderful teacher Lucilia Dinis, a girl from ipanema, and the art of pottery. But I have to say that Germany is the reason that I met not only ceramics but the art therapy as a customer, and I have a long story to tell (that would need a completely other interview) of overcoming and rebuilding myself after art therapy what made my connection with art really start. What about jewelry you may be asking. it was in a city called kalsruhe in Germany that I bought my first natural ceramic necklace and in that art environment, looking the way those artists lived in that city, I said to myself: that is me. Back in Rio, I went to Cunha a ceramic city close to São Paulo and I just recognized myself in the way people lived in the country area making ceramics and living the natural life. I thought: that is how I want to live life.: Making ceramic art and live the nature. When I moved to USA, I had the plan to study physiology at college together with art because I wanted to learn art therapy and help people overcome what life brings bad to them and they don’t deserve. I want to help people to find themselves back like I was finding myself back through art. I graduated in art at college and I was ready to continue my education when the pandemic came in the same time, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease of the Thyroid and after taking medical courses online I found out I need to eliminate as much as toxic of my body to be able to live ok. I opened a small studio at home and started by making jewelry made out of natural earth clay. That was my way to help me first because I always loved colorful jewelry and help other women that need to be toxic-free but still enjoy jewelry. It was also my way to make art during the pandemic. So, I opened my Instagram page JEWELRY AND JOY! At first, jewelry and joy was opened to inspire my teenager son to be an entrepreneur, but also my place to share my art with the world. Today this brand is my small business and I see it as my start in my journey as a ceramist and artist. Its value is sustainability, natural life, and joy. I love this name by the way and I want my jewels to help women to bring back the JOY that somehow life took away from them because I believe we have to pursue JOY as it is the creator Holy Spirit to us and a healthier and more natural way of living because life is the most precious jewelry we can carry at our neck.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, not easy not at all. One of the struggles was deciding to take this journey in my 50s. Other big struggle that I live right in this moment is to decide between art therapy and ceramics. I just wish I could or can do both in some time of my journey. Other struggle is to find a ceramic community and I miss been in touch with people that think like I do about art and natural way of life. The biggest struggle in the business itself since I just started is to find my public which is a unique public, as unique as ceramic jewelry can be.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work is ceramics. I do ceramic jewelry. Not only jewelry to were but home jewelry and also items for pets and cars like my ceramic oil diffusers. I am more known now for my original and unique ceramic necklace and some look like natural stones people say. I am also known for my empathy for people, as a people person, my communication skills and love for people addresses me. I just like to share joy. What sets me apart from others is the unique things I do and the natural clay and more natural material that I work with.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a curious, active, and a different child. My family used to say I was a piece of work, not an easy child. People used to say I was born to be an artist, but I think they saw me as an actor or something like that because of my extrovert personality, never as a hand-building artist. funny thing is I used to love to play with sand and water around waterfalls and rivers in Goias where I was born. I was also a reader, and I loved writing. I wrote novels and books but I never showed anyone. They were too much from my imagination. That is what defines me as a child: imagination.
