Check Out Ruth Brown’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Brown.

Ruth, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi, I’m Ruth!
I am 32 years old. I am a licensed cosmetologist. My passion started to come to light when I was just 15 years old. Born and raised in Lakeland, Florida. I work mostly on natural hair doing braids, extension services, silk presses and natural stylings. I love all the kinks and coils of natural hair. I watched my sister and her friend do each others hair. I started on my own hair, then my sisters and then to cousins. I never knew how big of a career I can have but I believe God gave me chances throughout life and I chose go after some opportunities.

I worked as a waitress from 2012 -2020. In 2014 I decided to sign up and attend Paul Mitchell the school Oviedo. I worked 8am-4pm and the went to school 5pm to 10pm, 4 days a week for 15 months. I enjoyed my experience in school and felt like I was in the right field. I graduated in 2016 and now I had to make things happen on my own. I continued to work my serving job and had hair clients after long shifts. So you can imagine how long my days were. I got connected with a company called A Touch of Fierce. That specializes in bridal and event makeup and hair services. This opened up another part of the hair industry I didn’t think I would be a part of. My bridal and special event styling flourished. I tapped into a creativity I knew was there. I owe many thanks to the owner Lyric cause she took a chance on me and I was able to refine my talent in ways that only made me stronger as a stylist.

In 2020 Covid happened. I told myself I would never clock in on anyone else’s clock. I got furloughed in March and it actually felt good not to be weighed down by that job anymore. I had a 6month old child to take care of. It was either I sink or swim. I swam my hardest into being a business owner with professionalism and integrity. I’ve been working for myself since. And there’s only more to come.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has been smooth. If I had to say anything got in my way it would be myself and my mental of being good enough. With social media being a big thing in society and there being so many “social media stylist”. I’m not one to follow trends. I’m in it for myself , current and future clients. I’m very ambitious so I do want more and have goals to expand my business eventually which may be my biggest hurdle but I’m determined to build a legacy for myself and my little one.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
