Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Jones.
Hi Scott, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My counseling career started in Maryland . After discharge from the military in 1989 I went after a degree in pastoral ministry. It was then I started down the counseling journey and have been meeting with folks since 2001. I worked on a mobile crisis team for 10 years then moved to Florida due to my dad’s failing health. I continued counseling in addictions for another 1o years and started a private practice in southwest Orlando, Dr. Phillips. Getting married and moving to Oviedo I then moved my practice to Winter Park. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Christian counseling and specialize in outdoor therapy. My office is across the street from Martin Luther King Jr. park which has a paved path to walk and talk outdoors. I love offering guidance and perspective into people’s lives, it is such a satisfying career.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growth in my counseling career has been continued due to my love for learning, pursuing higher education and looking out for techniques and skills to add to my counseling practice. The challenges of keeping up with the field are continuous and that is a good thing because I want to stay fresh with new ideas and perspective. To be honest, I wasn’t a good student in high school and even in college. I had trouble comprehending and was a poor writer. So going after a higher education degree that emphasizes research and writing is a miracle. My mom reminds me of her surprise at my seeking this degree.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in outdoor therapy. This is popular on the west coast of the United States and in England but has not caught on in Florida. I love the outdoors and practicing my faith. I found in the counseling literature little information on the combination of these two areas. This combination is what I am doing my PhD dissertation on. I continue working with addiction and trauma as I specialize in both. I enjoy working with teens, adults, and couples. Teens are a fun group to work with due to their energy and view of the future. I wish that someone would have given me the chance to seek therapy as a teen, I think it would have helped greatly.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
So many interns that I supervise and even young counselors are intimidated by private practice and owning their own business. I was the same and it took me too many years to take the leap. The advice I would give is make this transition quickly if this is your desire. Some counselors enjoy the agency work which is also needed. I so enjoy the flexible schedule, choosing of people I work with, and being an entrepreneur that private practice offers.
