Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaunita Forrester.
Hi Shaunita, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always knew I wanted to be a business owner; I just didn’t know THIS was my path. I watched someone close to me switch from a 9-5 lifestyle to an entrepreneurial one and it drastically changed her mood and the quality of her life. She had more “free time” and that was something I always looked up to so that was when I knew I couldn’t get the lifestyle I wanted working for anyone else. I’m 29 now but when I was younger, I did everything from retail jobs, serving jobs, illegal jobs, then I became a dancer (stripper) to pay restitution for the mistakes I made. Within that time, I discovered a whole new market of business I could tap into. I made the money I needed to pay the restitution in 17 months then stopped dancing a while after that. I thought I only wanted a bikini company but the quality of things I was getting was just not what I had in mind when I was jumping into reselling. So, I decided I wanted to learn how to sew the items myself in order to make sure the quality was up to my standards. I asked a friend of mine who already attended fashion school for help learning how to sew and even tried starting the business with her, but we just didn’t share the same passion. I found someone on Instagram that was selling 8 hr. sewing classes for $600 but she was in NC, so I took a round-trip flight in a day. For the full year of 2020 I was sewing while in lockdown for quarantine, every single day, all I wanted to do was get better. Now I don’t only make bikinis, I make gowns, prom looks, photoshoot looks, costumes, Nightlife attire, the list goes on. I hope to tap into the bridal market soon
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing great comes easy. It was never a smooth road for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a designer and seamstress based in Orlando. I specialize in bikinis and nightlife attire; I’m known for the best quality and best-priced stripper clothes in Orlando. What sets me apart from other designers in my particular field is I used to be a dancer so I’m relatable… A manager in a restaurant gets more respect for having worked his way through all positions rather than just coming in at the top. You have to know how to play all positions. The girls and I have a great relationship, I house mom at some clubs in Deland and Daytona
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I don’t think I’ve changed much since growing up. I’ve always just loved laughing, being free, and having a good time. I used to love to dance, still do. I started professionally at age 3 Leggz Dance Academy in Kissimmee. Anything creative has always interested me and that’s probably why I’m so happy in my career now, being a creator.
