Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheena Willis.

Sheena, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2016 I started My Emma’s Line & Boutique. The name was my husband’s idea after our daughter, Emmaline. I’ve always been creative and trying out different crafts.

I remember making a green tie-dyed shirt with silver jewels attached by glitter puffy paint when I was 7! I thought it looked so cool and wore that shirt all the time! I’m still a huge fan of tie-dye but I also love to bleach and distress t-shirts! I spend a lot of time watching YouTube tutorials, talking to other makers, and researching new products to work with! My style has evolved over time with trends and my stages in life. MEL’s focus is woman’s t-shirts, a lot of mommy & me, customs for parties & theme parks, and fun accessories.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
MEL has had its share of struggles like any business. The hardest was realizing not everyone wants to see you happy, even friends and family. It took time and tears but I learned that their actions are a reflection of their own insecurities not me or my dreams.

Another struggle has been the transition of a side business to my main source of income. It took years of consistency and in 2020 I saw that shift beginning and thankful to be able to support my family through creativity!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
MEL is a locally owned small business run by my assistant, Emmaline, and me!

What makes our shirts different? The quality! I own my own equipment- so your sublimated shirts are designed, printed, and pressed by me – in house!

What’s sublimation? It’s a process used to make long-lasting shirts using ink that is heated, turned into a gas, then dyes your shirt!

Another option we offer is screen printing! These are fun designs that can go on virtually any color!

At least once a week there is a themed drop and will feature some of the latest designs for your everyday wear!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The word no does not intimidate me. I learned early in life to hear no as “not right now” and to take the time to foster that relationship into a yes.

I also do not give up. I’ll try multiple techniques and business practices, note what worked and where to make improvements. I’m also willing to share what I’ve learned. Not always for someone to take my advice, but I know it helps me to hear or read about other businesses experience and take inspiration from that.
