Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Mero.
Hi Stephanie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist since 2014. I specialized in cutting, styling and coloring naturally curly hair because I struggled with my own my entire life. In 2019 I started using YouTube and Instagram to help educate people digitally regarding hair styling and hair health. Later that year my hair and my clients hair became damaged and thin because of the product line I was using at the time, called DevaCurl. Since then I’ve been primarily focused on studying how consumer products can impact health and using my social media platforms to educate my following so they can better protect themselves from the under-regulated beauty industry and other household product types that can influence health.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has certainly been a challenging journey. In addition to losing my hair, I became quite ill from the chemicals in the products I was using. Using social media to find and connect with other victims helped us come to an understanding of what had happened but it also brought many adversaries to my inbox and comments who believed I was not being truthful about my experience, even though I was just one among thousands. I felt I needed to educate and advocate for everyone else who was suffering but that never really gave me the chance to cope with my own losses.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a cosmetologist, I specialize in working with very curly and corkscrew shaped hair textures. The way I cut hair is more like sculpture than technical haircutting. I use only my eye and my scissors to shape the haircut. I am proud of my living, moving pieces of art and the fact that my clients can enjoy their haircut shape for over a year because it grows out beautifully. I also know that many of my clients now are coming to me for guidance on hair health and an overall healthier lifestyle. As a personal and digital educator, I apply the extensive research on consumer products and environmental toxins to my recommendations on products and lifestyle choices and I believe that sets me apart from most hairstylists.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a child, I was horribly bullied for my hair and that had a large impact on my personality. I was very outgoing and would use humor to gain approval and secure friendships. I was always very creative. I loved to write poetry, listen to music and dance, and put together performances at home with my friends. I always liked to have a lot of people around me and I am still very social to this day.
