Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Keen.

Tom Keen

Hi Tom, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey has blended service, leadership, and a steadfast commitment to community values. My 21 years in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Flight Officer instilled in me the core values of honor, courage, and commitment. These years were formative, shaping my approach to leadership and public service. I took pride in serving our country and learned the significance of teamwork, strategic thinking, and resilience. After retiring as a Commander, I transitioned into the private sector, bringing my experience and skills to the aerospace industry. This industry, known for its high standards and innovation, allowed me to continue my growth, professionally and personally. I honed my business acumen here, learning the ins and outs of a complex, fast-evolving sector. Throughout my career, I’ve always been driven by a desire to give back. This led me to get involved in community service, participating in various veterans’ organizations and serving on the City of Orlando’s Citizens’ Police Review Board and Mayor’s Veteran Advisory Council. My community work has always been about making a tangible difference in people’s lives. The decision to run for State Representative for District 35 was a natural progression of my commitment to serve. Witnessing the challenges our community faced, from the property insurance crisis to issues of reproductive freedom, I felt compelled to step up. My campaign was built on the belief that we can create a more equitable and just Florida with the right leadership. Today, as a State Representative of HD-35, I carry with me all these experiences – the military discipline, the strategic mindset of the private sector, and the grassroots understanding of community needs. My story is about continuous learning, adapting, and serving with integrity and dedication.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to where I am today has undoubtedly had its share of challenges, each serving as a vital learning experience. My journey hasn’t always been smooth, but my struggles have strengthened my resolve and commitment to service. One of the significant challenges I faced was transitioning from a military to a civilian career. Adapting to a corporate environment after two decades in the structured world of the Navy required a significant shift in mindset. It tested my ability to translate my military skills and leadership experience into a different context. Another struggle was the sheer intensity of political campaigning. Stepping into the political arena was a new and sometimes daunting experience. Political life’s pace and public scrutiny were intense, and balancing this with family life and personal commitments was a constant challenge. The world of politics is often unpredictable and requires a thick skin, which I had to develop quickly. However, these struggles were instrumental in shaping my approach to leadership and public service. They taught me the importance of adaptability, resilience, and community connection. Each challenge was an opportunity to grow, learn, and better equip myself to serve the people of Florida effectively.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My journey has been shaped significantly by the experiences and values instilled in the United States Navy. Beyond my family, I hold my ongoing commitment to serving veterans and my community in the highest regard. One of my proudest roles is serving on the board of Fisher House, an organization dedicated to providing accommodations and care for families of veterans receiving treatment at VA facilities. This work allows me to give back to my fellow veterans and support families during challenging times. In addition to my work with Fisher House, I’ve been actively involved in various veterans’ boards and community organizations. My dedication to community service extends to local issues as well. I’ve been part of traffic safety committees in my neighborhood, playing a key role in implementing traffic calming measures like speed humps to enhance public safety. I was also an active member of a resident-run committee that successfully advocated for a new public library in our community. My story is continuous service – from the Navy to my neighborhood, veterans’ affairs, and local community projects.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is the value of resilience and adaptability. Serving in the Navy taught me that circumstances can change rapidly and often unpredictably. This requires a firm resolve and the ability to adapt to new challenges swiftly. In my military and civilian life, I’ve encountered situations that demanded quick thinking, flexibility, and a solid commitment to the task. I’ve repeatedly applied this lesson in my community work and political endeavors. Whether navigating the complexities of veterans’ needs, advocating for safer neighborhoods, or campaigning for public office, staying resilient in the face of challenges and adapting to evolving situations has been paramount. This lesson extends beyond just dealing with immediate challenges; it’s about embracing change as an integral part of growth. It’s about understanding that setbacks are not final but are stepping stones to more significant achievements. This mindset has been a guiding principle in my life, and it’s what I strive to bring to my work every day – the understanding that with resilience and adaptability, we can overcome obstacles and achieve our goals.
