Check Out Tonsor Brand’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to  Tonsor Brand.

Hi Tonsor Brand, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been a barber/cosmetologist for 20 years. In 2014, I conceived an idea to create a beard grooming device that assists men to be able groom themselves away from the shop. Just when I thought I had the million-dollar idea, I didn’t realize the steep road ahead. I was briefly coached by a fellow stylist’s husband who had an extensive business background. He gave me the basis on how to start and develop an idea and that’s when the road began. I met quite a few interesting people along the way through many unique opportunities. There were of course many failures, detours, and small wins along the way. So far, we have overcome them being strong in faith. The journey is far from over, We finally did it—our flagship product, the Tonsor E.D.G.™, is officially patented (thank God)! We’re proud of this milestone, and now our focus is clear: marketing our tool to put Tonsor on the map.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. My first major setback came in 2014, when a client introduced me to a potential investor—a high-net-worth individual who was eager to invest like they do on Shark Tank. I walked into that meeting full of nerves and self-doubt. I was inexperienced, intimidated by his success, and unsure how to present myself. Standing in front of his million-dollar home, my client said, “This guy is rich, but I need a whale. One day I’ll find that whale.” Something in me whispered, you’re standing right next to him—and I didn’t understand it then, but I do now.

The meeting didn’t go well. He didn’t have a beard, didn’t see the vision, and doubted the market potential. He told me I was still young and wished me luck. The whole thing was over in 40 minutes. I was devastated. I put everything away—literally shoved my work under the bed and didn’t look at it for months.

About a year later, the same client showed me an ad for a similar product and said, “That stings, huh?” I remember replying, “Mine’s different—you’ll see. Theirs is handheld, mine is hands-free.” And from that moment on, I was determined to bring my vision to life.

My detour was a business venture that organically fell on my lap in 2015. I was always cutting a group of guys that worked in financial sales. I built a following with their office. They grew to quite a company at the time and the business was mutual. I could no longer keep up with their attendance because I grew in demand and they moved to Orlando. The running joke was I cut so any of their employees that I should have my own shop in their company building. I saw an opportunity and created a mobile barber/hairstyling service for work. I quickly became popular within the company and the business started expanding. This is where I met business-minded people and grew confidence to speak to people with money. I learned the lingo and how to start an online store. By 2020, we closed the business due to the pandemic with work from home taking over and killing the business model. It was a blessing in disguise, since salons and barbershops at the time were closed, my calling came back to my early invention. My passion resurfaced and I hit it strong all over again.

The early patent process was one of my biggest challenges. Like most people, I assumed it would be straightforward and somewhat affordable—I was wrong. I dove deep into research, reading blogs, watching videos, and enrolling in pro bono programs designed for aspiring inventors and entrepreneurs. They were a lifeline. The USPTO has an incredible amount of guidance, including where to begin and how to apply for assistance.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been in the cosmetology industry for over 20 years, and my passion has always been men’s grooming—haircuts, beard shaping, and helping guys feel confident in their look. I’m known for my attention to detail and for building real relationships with my clients. At the salon I work in, I’m one of the only stylists who focuses almost exclusively on men’s hair and facial grooming, and that’s created a unique balance that both the clients and my coworkers genuinely appreciate.

What I’m most proud of is my consistency and longevity in this field. It’s a physical, demanding profession, and it takes real commitment to show up every day with the same energy, patience, and love for the craft. Trends shift, but the trust you build with people—that never fades.

That same drive is what pushed us to finally bring Tonsor Brand to life. We had actually come up with the idea for the Tonsor E.D.G.™ years earlier, but it ended up on the back burner. During the pandemic, when barbershops were shut down and so many men were struggling to maintain their grooming routines, it brought that idea back front and center. We realized just how needed it really was. The Tonsor E.D.G.™—a hands-free grooming guide—was created to help men line up their beards at home with confidence and precision. Today, it’s a fully patented product developed through years of hands-on experience behind the chair.

Tonsor Brand has since grown into more than just one tool. We’re expanding into products that serve both our clients and our fellow stylists—like our custom stylist aprons, apparel, hats, and soon, professional accessories like color bowls and tools made with working cosmetologists in mind.

What sets us apart is that everything we create comes from real-world experience—we’ve lived the day-to-day grind, we understand the needs, and we build with purpose and functionality. This journey started with a pair of clippers and a chair—and now it’s evolved into a brand we’re incredibly proud of. We’re just getting started.
