Check Out Viviana Char’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Viviana Char.

Hi Viviana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I come from the Caribbean coast of Colombia, a region that is full of color and joy. My country has unique landscapes. From mountainous jungles to grassy plains and pristine beaches. Due to its location different altitudes and climates Colombia, is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. This means we have access to unique plants and materials that have been used by indigenous cultures to create incredible pieces of art. Our artists use sophisticated hand-wrought techniques, from weaving and embroidery to beading to represent our customs, beliefs, and joyous spirit. It is not uncommon to see a brightly colored hammock, rug, or mochila bag which are weaved by indigenous peoples. Their colors, patterns, and materials are unique and represent the creator’s feelings at that time, much like a work of art. I wanted to show their creations to the world. This is the purpose behind Klei Hand Crafted.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think starting a new business is never easy but for me, the main challenge was finding partners that would allow me to get my products to the right customers. Our products are not part of the modern-day consumer culture, our pieces are unique and timeless much like the tradition we represent. Artisans spend countless manually working on each piece we sell. Our processes will never be industrialized, and our customers appreciate the unique qualities of what we offer.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in creating art in the form of a rug. Our process involves blending traditional materials such as copper, tin, silk, and natural fibers with contemporary designs by using centuries-old techniques. They are truly artworks that cannot be reproduced in a factory.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Since I was very young, 7 years old to be precise, my vocation was dealing with people and never being behind a desk or a computer. I always loved doing arts and crafts. I have a cousin who is the same age as me and she shared this vocation with me. Unfortunately, we lived in two different cities in Colombia that are 3 hours away, but every time we got together it was to make handicrafts and sell them to family, friends, and neighbors. We created our “company” called V&V THING AND CRAFTS. Her name is Veronica, and I am Viviana hence the V&V. There is a bridge between the two cities, and we said we were going to put a store there to sell all our creations. I remember that and I seem to be living it today. Designing and creating handmade things that generate employment, have that unique stamp, and highlight the talent of my country, without a doubt I feel that when it has that handmade impetus it is not only a unique work of art, but it brings with it much more value.
