Today we’d like to introduce you to Symone Taylor.
Hi Symone, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory
In 2015, I began my yoga practice as a means to increase my activity and to reduce stress. Little did I know that the practice was going to take me on a journey of abundant healing and growth. In 2018, I decided to deepen my practice by enrolling in Ignite Yoga and Wellness Institute’s 200 Teacher program. Noticing the many disparities and systematic barriers present during my journey, I became determined to break those barriers and systems, while and empowering BIPOC within the mental health and wellness communities.
My goal is to create spaces for BIPOC to heal, focus on wellness and community to by making mental mealth and wellness services inclusive, culturally competent, and most of all affordable.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, I literally started my business right as the pandemic began. I went from planning to have in-person clients, classes, and workshops but that has caused things to shift to virtual platforms for the time being.
Also, not having significant funds for startup capital has brought some limitations. Being that it is just me with no loans or handouts that does get stressful at times being a solo Black entrepreneur.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed clinical social worker and 200-hour Hatha trained yoga instructor. I specialize in providing culturally competent, inclusive, lgbtq+ friendly, affordable, and holistic healing services.
I think that what sets me apart from others is my lived experience. I have a story, let’s face it we all do. I am proud of my ability to continue to persevere despite the challenges that I have experienced. I think that it is so important for my clients and those who I encounter on their mental health and wellness to be able to see others who have made it to other side. I think that normalizes, gives people the inspiration and courage to overcome the not so pleasant parts of their journey and create the life that they want to live. I think what also sets me a part is that I really want to make sure that no one neglects their wellness due to finances (that is capitalistic), I offer sliding scale appointment slots.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe that this is generations of hard work and blessings of my ancestors coming to fruition. I am just the vessel. We all have the chance to be good luck, and I think that is through our intentions and actions in life.
