Community Highlights: Meet Brittany Long of Win with Systems

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Long.

Hi Brittany, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
About five years ago, I was an award-winning science teacher. Shortly after, I had a cancer scare that turned my world upside down. I thought, “if this is my last year on Earth, am I okay with how I’m spending my time?” While teaching is an excellent career for many, the answer came back loud and clear – teaching was not the right profession for me. I spent the next two years trying to figure out what I wanted to do. In total, I tried over 27 side hustles. 27! During that time, I started attending a get-together with business owners in Orlando. I felt like a complete fraud. These people had businesses and were taking action! They were using words I had never heard of and were making more in a month than I did in an entire year of teaching. But the biggest difference between these successful business owners and me had nothing to do with their monthly income or the fact that they had a business. The massive difference is the one thing that made me stick out more than anything else. While I was complaining about being in a job I didn’t want to be in anymore. They were looking for solutions to their challenges or obstacles. They weren’t venting or complaining. They were taking action. I decided I didn’t want to be stuck. I wanted to find my path, just like they had. And so I stopped complaining and started focusing on forward movement. “What can I do today to get closer to my dream life tomorrow?” It was messy, uncomfortable, and awkward. I was out of my comfort zone and, for many months, felt like a fish out of water. But instead of being a fish gasping on the riverbank, wanting to be thrown in. I was jumping in and out of the water, getting uncomfortable, growing, and then getting uncomfortable again. Everything I did felt so challenging, and I watched YouTube video after YouTube video to try to learn new skills. I started with graphic design and then progressed to funnel building until I found my true love in email marketing.

I wanted to be the best in the business, so I practiced. Every day I practiced. I read emails by the best of the best. I reviewed my emails and edited them; I took training on email marketing and listened to podcast episodes and presentations. And with each course, each presentation, and each email, I got better and better. I would have continued on this path until something unexpected happened. My clients told me how exhausted they were. How tired they were of the hustle. How much they wanted to take time off, but because they had to sell, they couldn’t. That, coupled with the opportunity from a dear friend and client, led to me niching down in Evergreen Email marketing. That’s the kind of email marketing that triggers automatically. It’s the kind of email marketing you only write once, and then it continues to nurture your audience and sell for you. If you’ve been shopping online and left something in your cart and then got an email stating you could still finish your purchase, that’s an evergreen, automated email. Or if you’ve ever signed up to be notified of sales from a brick-and-mortar store and then get a welcome email once you sign up, that’s an Evergreen Email. If you’ve ever gone to the nail salon, dentist’s office, or hairdresser and they send you an email reminding you about your appointment and telling you what to expect, someone like me usually writes that.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far, the journey has been smooth?
My entrepreneurial journey has been challenging sailing. The worst part was when I thought I was the only one who had experienced ups and downs in my business. I felt like a failure like everyone else had the magic puzzle piece, and I was missing something. Or worse, that I couldn’t hack it as a business owner. Then I started to open up about the highs and lows of business to my mentors and colleagues. They all said the same thing. “We’ve all been there.” “It happens.” “This is part of the journey.” Knowing I didn’t alone take a huge weight off my chest and helped me release the shame and guilt, I felt about not being a “good enough” entrepreneur. Now when obstacles or lower months happen, I think, “what do I need to do differently?”, “Who might have valuable insight on this?” and “What action am I going to take today so this doesn’t happen again?”

We love getting to be part of our client’s success!

What characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to if you had to?
I’ve spent much time with people further than me – mentors, authors, and colleagues. I noticed a pattern in the most successful entrepreneurs – they are consistent and persistent in the low periods of business, just as they are in the highs. They’re committed to finding solutions, not wasting time venting or focusing on all the problems or obstacles. They rely on strong relationships, focusing on what they can give before asking for anything in return. These are all characteristics I’ve implemented, but the one that’s made the biggest impact on my success is solutions-focused.
