Community Highlights: Meet Christine LaM’ee of Sanford Pelvic Therapy and Wellness LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine LaM’ee.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started working in an orthopedic physical therapy clinic ten years ago and had the opportunity to train in the specialty of pelvic floor therapy. I was interested in this study area as a woman, and as a clinician, I have a never-ending desire to learn more about the body, so I jumped at this chance. I had no idea how much I would fall in love with pelvic therapy. Patients trust us with their most personal information and challenges, and it is so rewarding to change a person’s life by helping them get relief from difficulties that significantly affect their quality of life. I am learning even more about myself now that I am a business owner. There is an entirely new set of skills to master.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is probably no great reward that doesn’t have challenges, but I wouldn’t want to be on another road. I was older when I returned to school and finished my degree in my early 40s. To some, that is a challenge, but I truthfully didn’t have a clear understanding of myself and my talents until later in life. Also, having four children and being a more mature woman has given me some personal experience to help my patients.
While building my career in physical therapy clinics, I was challenged by how patients were treated in the insurance and medical industry. I found myself trying to do better, but limited by employer rules and insurance limitations. Short visit times packed through the day, clinicians with limited training, and only giving patients what the insurance company deemed they deserved were the state of affairs. I wanted to offer more to the community than I was currently seeing available, so I decided to start my own business. Just like most businesses, the first year was the hardest, but I was still happier. I am now able to offer free community education and workshops, as well as free postpartum screenings. I can give my patients the best care they deserve, and that is worth all of the struggles.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sanford Pelvic Therapy and Wellness helps people of all genders get lasting relief from pelvic dysfunction. We have a pre/postnatal program that will take you from reduced pain during pregnancy and birth prep to postpartum recovery and return to sport. “More than just Kegels!” is one of my slogans, as the pelvic floor is just a part of our whole system and does not work alone. We specialize in pelvic pain, including painful sex, bladder pain, tailbone pain, and lower abdominal pain. I am most proud that we are a trauma-informed clinic that respects all people. I love that by owning my own business, I have the opportunity to give my time and energy to community education.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
This is a fun question! When I look back, I see myself as a curious and fun-loving kid. I was, and still am, “full of energy” and don’t remember ever saying no to any adventures or activities. I spent a lot of time building forts in the woods, riding horses, and playing in the neighborhood.
